Tips On Breathing Easier At Home
• Groom pets often and minimize their access to bedrooms evident, the plants should be repotted or kept outdoors.

and pollutants in the home may seem like a breath of fresh air.
That’s especially true for the 40 million Americans with aller-
gies and the 17 million with asthma.
According to a recent report from the American Lung
Association Health House Project and 3M, choosing a high effi-
ciency furnace filter can make a big difference in improving air
quality at home. Yet only one in eight Americans purchases a
high efficiency filter for the furnace.
Here are several other tips to help you and your loved ones
breathe easier at home, courtesy of the American Lung
Association Health House Project:
• Prohibit smoking in the home.
• Install a carbon monoxide detector on every floor of the
house.
• Make sure gas cooking appliances are vented to the out-
doors.
• Test your home for radon.
• Clean window coverings-they are magnets for dust. Use
window shades made of plastic, wood or other washable mate-
rials for easy cleaning.
• Use a damp mop or cloth when cleaning. Never use Using a high efficiency furnace filter can help reduce indoor
aerosols or spray cleaners in the bedroom. air pollution.
• Store firewood in the garage or outdoors rather than near
the fireplace or anywhere else in the home. Drying firewood
can generate mold spores which can easily contaminate an
entire house.
• Keep humidity levels low with a dehumidifier. Clean it reg-
ularly so it doesn’t become a pollution source.
• Run the furnace fan continuously, regardless of the out-
door temperature. To do so, set the furnace thermostat to the
“on,” rather than the “auto” position.
• Use a high efficiency furnace filter, such as a Filtrete filter
from 3M, and replace it every two to three months. A high effi-
ciency filter not only protects the furnace, but can also capture
up to 30 times more allergens such as pollen, pet dander and
smoke than standard fiberglass filters.
• Have a professional inspect the furnace once a year to
make sure that air intake is adequate and the unit is operating
at peak efficiency.
As part of an ongoing partnership to raise awareness about
indoor air quality issues, the American Lung Association Health
House Project and 3M are offering “A Guide for Creating a
Healthier Home.” To obtain a copy of this booklet free of
