Petroglyphs can be found in a variety of
locations. In the picture to the left, the
abrading marks were found at the top of
a shelter in a creek bed in West Texas. In
the picture below, the abrading marks
began above ground and ran below sur-
face level. The rock at the right broken
off from the main figure indicates a
great age for the petroglyph. Texas
Almanac Photos.So-called shield art is common among
Indians of the plains. But it is not often
found in rock art like that in the picture
to the left. The stick to the right of the
figure is calibrated in two-inch stripes.
