Library amazes fourth
Dear Mrs. Hatsuyo,
I want to thank you for
showing me the micro film
and the micro fiech.
It’s incredeble how a
whole book can fit in that
small card! I like the
machines you have there.
I learned some things I
did not know. I hope / can
go there again in the
future and thank you for
everything.
Your friend,
Juan Sanchez
This is one of the many
letters received by the
University Library staff
who recently hosted the
fourth grade class of La
Union Elementary School
of Canutillo, N.M.
Although the children’s
grammar and spelling may
not be perfect, the
children made the library
staff feel “happier and
cheerful,” said Hatsuyo

tant.
One young boy, Eric
Medina, who was shown
the library’s telephone
book collection from
various cities, later wrote,
“I am going to tell my
sister to take me to the
Phone book so I can get
the phone number of
Dallas my favorite foot-
ball team. Maybe I might
be in their team some day
and play left guard for the
team.”
Another boy said he
had hoped that his father
could have been on the
tour. Erich Saas, who
signed his letter “Serious-
ly yours,” wrote: “I
would like to say thank
you for showing us the
microfilm and the
microfiech. I wish my dad
was there to see how you
do that. I hope when I
grow up 1 can do the same
thing.”
One of
classmates,
Erich’s
Alma
Sauceda, compared her
graders
school library to the
University’s and wrote: “I
think I will go to the
library next year. It was
very quiet in there. In our
library it is very noisy. I
hope I’ll see you again at
the library.”
In closing his letter,
Stanly Usteen spelled
thank you again: “t-h-a-c-
k y-o-u a-g-i-n.”
And Melissa Sumpter
wrote “I really appreciate
you taking us all over the
library. It was fun going
up and down the sters.”
Many of the fourth
graders mentioned in their
letters a desire to attend
UT El Paso “someday.”
Martin Hernandez
wrote “Maybe even some-
day I will like to go the the
University when I’m
grown up and study to
work in the library.”
Welcome Class of 1993!
Olander becomes dean;
College accepts choice
By Diana Washington
Assistant News Editor
Ending all suspense until a permanent dean is .
found, University President Haskell Monroe named
Joseph D. Olander, vice president for academic af-
fairs, interim dean of the College of Education.
Last April, a search committee’s work had been
scrapped, and its recommendations for a new dean
turned down by the president in favor of reopening the
selection process.
“It was the most appropriate decision under the cir-
cumstances. The president and I had been discussing a
number of alternatives since the search and screening
was reopened,” said Olander.
Appointing the academic vice president to fill in
temporarily as a college dean is not unusual for UT El
Paso; and, Olander said it was best “to appoint so-
meone from outside the College of Education.”
James Mason, acting dean, said about the appoint-
ment, “It was a decision made, I accept it, it’s OK.
I’ve been around a long time (3 years) and I’ve made
many changes (in the college).”
Mason said there was an understanding between

him and the administration that his term would be for
one academic year.
Three associate professors of education, Bonnie
Brooks, chairperson of the first search committee,
Noeline Kelly, current acting assistant dean, and Den-
nis Bixler-Marquez, Chicano Studies director, were
chosen as interim assistant deans.
Chairperson of Curriculum and Instruction James
Milson, who himself was being considered as interim
dean, had no comment.
Brian Kelly, chairperson of the health and physical
education department, said he was aware that Milson
and others were recommended for the deanship.
However,“It was a good appointment as a temporary
arrangement,” he said.
Everett Davis, psychology and guidance chairper-
son, said, “As to whether I think he’s qualified, I
would certainly be in no position to say no.”
“Once Dr. Olander was appointed, Brooks (or the
others) came as no surprise.”
