Citing Carter’s handling of
the Iranian hostage situation,
the College Republicans at-
tacked Mondale for saying
that he would have done a
better job of security for the
Marines at the embassy in
Lebanon.
“We heard that Mondale
wasn’t active in the decisions
that were made by the Carter
administration, it seems to
me that’s a contradiction to
the way he’s running his cam-
paign,” said Jeff Twining,
Republican panelist. “He
seems to be running his cam-
paign based on his ex-
periences in world affairs dur-
ing
the
Carter
administration.”
The Democrats retaliated
by stressing that Carter is not
on the election ticket.
“Jimmy Carter is not runn-
ing for the presidency; Walter
Mondale is!” Kirby emphasiz-
ed. “Regarding the question
of how Mondale could do a
better job of security for the
Marines, just about anybody
could have done a better job
of security for the Marines.”
Although disagreeing on
other issues, both sides
agreed that if passed, Pro-
position 2 will be beneficial to
each student. This proposed
state constitution amend-
ment plans to restructure and
broaden the current use of the
Permanent University Fund.
“If you vote for Proposition
2, we’ll have better facilities,
better library materials and
better computers,’’ said David
Harvey,
discussion
moderator.
As the panelists made their
closing statements,
Republican fans and
Democratic supporters
discussed the outcome while
waiting to vote in the mock
election.
Abie Kupfer, senior
criminal justice major, said
even though he will vote
Republican in the national
election, he admitted the
Democrats were more
prepared at the debate.
“I thought the Republicans
were not attacking as well as
they should have,” he said.
Eladio Martin, junior
English major, said he was
dissatisfied with the brevity
of the question/answer ses-
sion.
“Everytime we wanted to
ask something (the
moderators) would tell us to
shut up,” he said. “This was
worse than the presidential
debates!”
