Foundation never heard of Christian Lyons
By Deborah Martin
suir wrer
“I think I am an integral part
of the spiritual revoration” of the
Plaza Theater, said a UT I.I Paw
art major who claims til have
been the “ precursor" to the drive
mo live the theater
However, the director of the El
Pato Community Foundation and
several people who have worked
to preserve the theater said they
had never heard of Christian
Lyom
During a Feb 4 interview,
I yons alwo said he prevented a
proposal to City Counc il last year
encouraging them to re-open the
Plaza
But Lyons did not present a
proposal to City Council: he
prevented a prospectus to El Con-
cillo de El Paso He Mid he
assumed he was speaking to the
City Council hec ause that is the
literal translation of the other
organization’s name.
"I didn't know there were two
city counc ils." he explained
The student wants to produce
his play. ( Children of the Sun, at
the grand opening of the Plaza
To achieve that goal, he Mid he
spoke to Cathy Dunn, whom he
identified as I-I Paso Communi-
ty Foundation Director Janice
Windle’s personal secretary
Windle Mid the Foundation
employs a full-time secretary, but
she does not have a personal
secretary.
She further explained that
while Dunn works as a consultant
to the foundation, she does not
work from the Foundation’s
office
The director said the Founda-
tion hires people to help on
specific projects, but it does not
employ a full time staff
Lyons Mid someone at the
Foundation directed him to call
Dunn, and gave him a number
where she could be reached The
number is not for Dunn’s
employer, and there was no
answer when the Prospector call-
ed it
Dunn remembered speak ing to
Lyons, but said she directed him
to call the Southwest Repertory
Organization because his play
“was not something we could be
involved with" at the time
Windle Mid because Dunn
handled advertising for the Rita
Moreno concert at the theater.
Lyons would not have been
directed to speak to her about
producing his play
Lyons Mid Dunn is the only
person he spoke to from whom he
recalls getting a name
Correction
In the March 5 issue of The The story should have
Prospector, it was incorrectly reported that WO Texas facul-
reported that WO UT System ty statewide had resigned
faculty members had turned in The Prospector regrets the
their resignations error
He still hopes to produce his
play in El Paso because it is his
"gift to the city."
If the Foundation turns him
down, he will produce if
elsewhere
Windle said it will be a while
before the Plaza Theater opens its
doors again, as the Foundation
will proceed slowly with the
restoration
