Most of us know that lowering our thermostats to 68° in
the winter helps save on electric costs. But you might not
know how such a small thing affects our system. ■ When
thousands of PEC members raise their thermostats at the
same time, they create a “peak” in power consumption,
usually between 5 and 10 a.m. These peaks lead to
higher generating costs. ■ They can be reduced, how-
ever, through voluntary load management. Load man-
agement can be as simple as leaving your thermostat set
at 68°. ■ Reducing peaks helps avoid the need for
expensive power plants in the future — and that’s a billion
dollar reason to set it and forget it.
