The Schoolmarm and the Dude
She. was a handsome schoolmarm
Taking her well earned rest:
Hit was a dudlsh drummer I
Shockingly overdresl.
Sho heard that be was wealthy
While he was told that she
Though dressing rathor plainly i
Was rich as rich could be.
Hbo was weary of teaching; .
Here was asplcndld show I
Capture this wealthy dudey i
Thon off to Europe go. I
llo waariultotlrctt of selling I
Sowing machines on time j
And being pusheil too often . '
Down tohls bottom dime.
Here wus a wealthy lady 1
Bho'd be a splendid catch -
t'p loomed an easy future
If he could make tho mulch.
She was qnttocoudcscondlng '
Smiling to see tho way '
That through her skillful planning 1
Dude fell an easy prey.
1 he Ivy waves are plashliix I
The sty looks soft and blue I
A happy pair ore sitting j
Away from pnbllo view.
Their arms are round each other
Their warm young Hps have met
The schoolmarm feels qulto happy J
And so does he "you bet." I
Alas I for human passions
Alas I for broken vow I
They met on the next morning '
And didn't even how J
She found him out a drummer; I
He d learnt that sho taught school:
Opinions aro divided
Which looked tho bigger fool.

A Most Worthy Object.
"Say Mister gimme a dime" begged
hard and manifestly inebtiated tramp of
portly and philanthropic looking gentleman.
' "What would you do with a dime If I gave
it to you!" asked the gertleman regarding
him suspiciously.
"Do with it 1" growled Ihe ttamp detecting
failure In the start. "Put it in the contribu-
tion box I What did yer suppose I'd do with
il t" Drake's Traveler's Magailne.
Not Selfish.
"Mike I am discouraged" said the Police
Judge t have let you off time and time
again and you have promised me that you
would never get drunk again."
"I wouldn'ter got dhrunk this tolni yer
honor only for I thought ye was out o'town."
"What difference should that make! It's
yourself that is being Injured not me."
"Oim not selfish yer honor that I think or
mesilf alone but as Oim the only man that's
been hurted by the transaction Jest fine me
one cent an' charge the city up with the
drinks for both arus." Atkansaw Traveler.
He Liked To.
They were deeply in love and by the lam
bent light of a turned down lamp they talked
in mellow tones of all that constituted happi-
ness for them. At last Ihe gitl in dulcet voice
said:
"Oh Algernon do you likefto travel I"
"Ay tweetheatt that I do. It broadens
one's views develops one's mind expands
one's knowledge increases"
"Don't go into particulars Algernon. It is
enough to know that you like to travel for I
hear father's footsteps coming down stairs
annd if you don't carry your desires Into effect
pretty rapidly there may be a difficulty in the
front hall." '
Algernon traveled.
Then and Now
"There's lots of difference" sighed Mrs.
Jepson to a friend the other day "between
courtship and marriage isn't there 7"
"Of course but the difference should be
for the better."
" 'Should be and Is are not always hand in
hand."
"Why ! Aren't you happy t"
"I guess so ; but it's so different"
"In what way t"
"Well" with another big sigh "before we
were married Mr. Jepson vowed that he'd do
anything and everything for me but now it
seems to me that he wants me to do anything
and everything for him and I'm almost tired
to death."
"Don't complain dear. It's only a way
the men have of equalizing things."
He Confessed
At a Thursday evening prayer meeting held
in an Interior town a week or two since a
brother arose and said he had a confession to
make. Much against his will he had been be-
guiled into buying railroad stocks as a specu-
lation. " Poor sinner1. Lost man 1" groaned the
circle.
" Yes I put up for stocks. I was templed
by Satan and I yielded" continued the re-
pentant. "How much 1" asked a csutious brother.
' Well I had about $2000 Invested."
" And you lost it all and there's no hope
for yout"
"Lost I No llrother Smith I cleared
$1500.
" Ah I you did t That somewhat alters the
case. I believe if Brother Jones bought a
$400 bell for our church and paid the expense
of revarnishing the pews the Lord would let
him off this time on suspended sentence!"

She Raised Them All.
A past city official was entertaining a num-
ber of members of the city government at his
residence. The day was Saturday. Supper
had been partaken of and at its conclusion
a little game of draw was proposed and be.
fore many minutes the entire party were
deeply engaged in the mysterious and fluctuat-
ing fortunes of "poker" as laid down In
General Schenck's rules for the government
of that alluring but fickle game. The time
flew rapidly and merrily the blind goddess
favoring now one and now another. At
length it was noticed that the hands of the
clock passed the hour of midnight and the
players Were encroaching on the first hours of
the Sabbath. But what cared thty for that T
There were large sums of money on the
table and the "pot" was one of formidable
proportions. "I'll raise you $5" eiclatmtd
one of the pltyeri "I'll lee that and raise
you $10" shouted another In his eicltement.
"I'll raise the whole of you out of this" was
Ihe cry of a new corner as a female was seen
i
enveloped in her night clothes and with a
horsewhip In her hand. There was an im-
' mediate break made for the doer and some
even found exit by the window abandoning
the "pot" and whatever money there was on
I the table; and 'tis said that some of those I
I city officials ate running from that little game I
up to the present time. The lady ol the j
j house admonished her liege lord not over j
I gently it Is to be presumed on his desecre- '
tlon of the Saobatb quietly swept up the
money and betook herself once more to bed. 1
There is good reason to believe that the
money was finally disposed of in charity. 1

All the Luxuries. 1
Sam Harrison is the clerk at the New Mc- 1
I.ure Wheeling and to him n man recently '
applied for quarters.
" What kind of a hotel do you keep ?" he
asked. I
" First class of course" said Sam with I
vigor.
" What does first class mean I"
" Why all the luxuries nice rooms good
beds fine table good meat good bread and
so forth and so on."
"How about the necessities!" j
"Ob there's a beer saloon right close a bar
connected with the house and you can take a
bottle up to your room." I
"All right Mr. Clerk I'll stop. I don't 1
care much for luxuries ; it's the necessities of
life that I want at a hotel. Just send up my
baggage and give me a room for a week."
