Water: the black gold of the 21st century
The black gold or Texas tea of the
21st century may be water rather
than oil. Author Marq de Villiers has
written an eloquent look at a pre-
cious resource in “Water” [333.91
DE]. The presence of water has per-
mitted great civilizations to grow.
Lacking water undermined others.
De Villiers suggests that water sup-
plies cannot be taken for granted.
Water in most major rivers is not
fit to drink. Aquifer and water table
levels are dropping alarmingly, ac-
cording to the author. As the author
puts it, “The trouble with water is
that they’re not making any more of

the cultural and ecological encoun-

more recent immigrants was the
main reason that bison disappeared.
ALPHABET V. GODDESS
In "The Alphabet Versus the
Goddess” [302.22 Shla], Leonard
Shlain proposes that reading “alpha-
betic literacy” rewired human think-
ing. It had what he calls profound
consequences for culture, history
and religion. With the advent of lit-
eracy, the act of reading an alphabet
reinforced the left side of the brain
at the expense of the right. The re-
sulting shift upset the balance be-
tween men and women. It caused
goddesses to disappear and wo-
