Football Banquet to reward
successful Greyhound season
The Boerne Greyhounds football
team caps its fall 2000 season with
the annual banquet this Monday,
Dec. 11, at the Boerne Community
Center.
Boerne was picked to finish fifth in
district (out of six) in one poll, and
another poll had them dead last. But
the Greyhounds finished fourth in
district, behind Smithson Valley,
Kerrville and New Braunfels, each
of which won at least two playoff
games.
The Hounds
finished their
year 6-4, which
was their best
record since
1996.
The team’s tri-
fecta
on
offense; quar-
terback Seth
Johnston, run-
ning
back
Kendall Turley,
and wider
receiver Logan
Kensing, each
broke school
records this sea-
son.

for yards, completions and touch-
down passes this season. His 1,151
yards broke Matt Deem’s 1993
record of 1,137, and Johnston’s 86
completions broke Deem’s previous
mark of 76 (also set in 1993).
Johnston’s 12 touchdown passes this
year tied a single-season mark. He
now shares the record with Trent
Taylor.
Turley set a record for a carries in
a season with 174. John McCracken
held the old record of 170 in 1991.
In addition, Turley was a member of
the 1,000 yard rushing club. He ran
for 1,129 yards, the fifth highest sin-
gle-season mark in club history.
Kensing broke school records for
receptions in a season, yards in a
season and receptions in a single
game. Logan had 41 catches for 690
yards this year, including nine
receptions in the season finale
against New Braunfels. He broke
the old records held by Dan Sharp.
Sharp had 527 yards receiving, 38

catches on the year, including eight
in one game in 1980.
Boerne broke another record - they
had 22 players selected for the acad-
emic all-district team: Doug
Duncan, Lin Hicks, Johnston,
Taylor Behrens, John Peddy, Ryan
McNabb, Kevin Doss, Kevin
Galbreath, Jeff Lang, Jordan Lettow,
Kendall Turley, Robert Williams,

Burleson.
Kensing and Tolliver (Offensive
line) were football first team all-dis-
trict selections. Tolliver also made
first team defense all district on the
defensive line. Second team all-dis-
trict selections were Turley at run-
ning back, Riedel at offensive line,
and Duncan at kicker and punter.
Lang made second team all district
at defensive back.
Honorable mention for all-district
were: (Offense) Johnston;
Thompson, tight end; Chance
Kucera, wide receiver; Andrew
Holden, center; Jerry Little, offen-
sive line. (Defense) Williams, line-
backer: Bryan Helper, defensive
r ’
end; Michael Kent, defensive line;
Matt Kubena, defensive line; Kevin
Doss, defensive back; Jack Kerr,
linebacker.
HOUNDS MAKE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT
The volleyball team discusses how many of them will make aca-
demic all district with coach Rebekah Hajduk during a match.
Hajduk's facial expression suggests she really doesn’t know.
From left to right, with numbers on back: Jaclyn Toohey,
Stephanie Locke, Veronica Mazal, Katy Guttery, Brooke Butler,
Kim Meuth, Erin Lee, Aleixis Bustos. Nine players from Boerne’s
varsity volleyball squad made academic all-district this season:
Seniors Melissa Loontjer, Erin Lee, Stephanie Locke, Alexis
Bustos and Veronica Mazal; Juniors Katy Guttery and Cate
Johnson; and Sophomores Kristen Schramek and Meagan Fox.

Toohey wins
sixth straight
tourney
The long delay didn’t cool off
Matt Toohey.
Though Boerne’s golf team hasn’t
played in nearly a month, Toohey (a
3rd team all-state selection and first
team all-regional) won his sixth-
straight high school tournament,
scoring 71 points in the Canyon
Stableford Classic Dec. 1-2. On his
own, Toohey outscored 13 teams.
“He’s our big gun this year,”
Boerne golf coach James Wright
said. “He just picked up where he
left off from last year.”
Boerne finished fourth (out of 23
teams) in the tournament with 98
points. Regan won with 125 points,
three ahead of New Braunfels.
Regan was third with 99 points.
Colin Hamer scored 11 points and
Zach Zvendsen and Lance Burnside
chipped in with eight points apiece.
The two-day event was scored
under the Stableford format, which
awarded one point for par, five for
birdies, and ten for eagles. Bogies
subtracted one point and double
bogies (or worse), three points.
“The points are misleading,”
Wright said. “If you make birdies,
you get a lot of points. It didn’t real-
ly reward pars or steady play.”
The first round of the tournament
was played at Bandit Golf Course in
New Braunfels. The second round
moved to Landa Park Golf Course
in New Braunfels.
“Toohey carried the team; the rest
of the team played consistent. If the
guys can back him up a little, we’ll
do well this year,” Wright said.
The golf team’s next tournament is
Jan. 8 in the Boerne Invitational at
Tapatio Springs Golf Course.
* The JV golf team finished ninth
out of 14 teams at the San Marcos
Invitational Dec. 4. Taft won the
event at 336. Boerne shot 387.
Others included New Braunfels at
359, San Marcos A at 353 and San
Marcos B at 393.
Chance Edmondson lead the
Greyhounds with a 92. Brent Goertz
was one shot back at 93, and Brain
Suttle four back at 96. Richard
Powell and Courtland Borne shot
106 and 109 to round out the team.
