The KLRN Art Auction will fea-
ture work by Boerne artist Rick
Pyndus tonight on Channel 9, begin-
ning at 6 p.m. The artist won this
year with his work, “Better Days,” a
poignant portrait of a battered
shrimp boat sunk at the dock. The
painting was juried into the sale by
Mark L. Smith, Ph.D. of Austin in
the top 40 out of 200 entries. Pyndus
donated the winning piece to
KLRN. Viewers may bid on the
piece valued at $695.
The artist, who has had a studio at
119 E. Frederick Street for six
months says he couldn’t be happier
in Boerne and is now looking for a
home here as well.
Pyndus has been an artist ever
since he could pick up a pencil. Yet,
it’s only been during the last decade
that he’s been able to concentrate on
art.
His career began as an intern at
KUHT, a public radio station, where
he was introduced to film work.
After graduating from Houston in
1973, he worked in Houston as a
cameraman and on lighting crews.
“We mostly did commercials and
documentaries,” he said.
Some of those assignments took
him to exotic places, like Iran in the
1970’s, where he learned creative
ways to keep his film from being
confiscated or destroyed by the
authorities there.
Pyndus then went into the com-
mercial side of the business for the
next 15 years.
“Houston got too big for us and we
decided to come home,” Pyndus erty.
said.
He worked in his family’s business
for a while. Then, he and his wife
decided it was time to get serious
about art. Until that time, he’d been
working in a small backyard studio.
“I wanted to make my studio more
accessible,” he said.
The couple, after looking for a
place on Main Street with no luck,
found a rustic cabin off the beaten
path. Well, not too much off the
beaten path. A daycare neighbors his
studio and often, during the day,
Pyndus can hear the sounds of chil-
dren at play. He’s even gotten to
know some of them by name.
“Jennifer and Taylor are pretty
bad,” he says shaking his head.
A beauty parlor with clientele, who
have often come to visit the Pyndus
Gallery after getting their ‘dos, is
located on the other side of his prop-
The artist knows whenever there’s
an emergency with a firehouse
across the street.
Despite the sounds of children’s
laughter and sirens blaring from
time to time, for the most part, it’s
restful in the cabin where he spends
his days painting. The studio, with
the exception of a desk for his com-
puter, a wooden chair for an occa-
sional guest and a refrigerator for
his lunch, is decorated with paint-
ings — in oil, pastel or charcoal —
propped on easels. Some have bit-
tersweet memories for the artist.
A charcoal portrait of Elvis, his cat
for 12 years, has the prominent
place above the fireplace.
“Elvis died last year. We miss
him,” Pyndus said.
All the work is for sale.
