very little sslad oil or even a little lard with
a drop of perlume in it will relieve your dis-

the fancy of the ultra-fashionable yet the

pardoned for making her table attractive by
using them. s

move the outer skin then stick cloves Into
the onion and bake it until it is nicely brown-

Ore of the wisest precautions to take when

When you open a can of tomatoes you may

A Brief Description of the Diseases
a few References of Remarkable Cures By Dr.
N. S. Burnham.
San Antonio lnug felt tho need of a skillful specialist In treating dlarascs of the' Rye Ear and
Throat- The Inhabttantsof all this Immense State
wcrecompellcd tomaketong Journeys to distant cities at great expense such as Kansas City
St. Louis and Chicago and sllll further East In order to obtain relief for diseases aflllcUng
theso organa and parts.
Many of tho citizens of this Statn who went to
skill msde the acquaintance of the Oculist Aurlst
Dr. 3ST. S. B
who had charge f tho Kansas City Mo. Bye Eir
united In urging him to come to this point In Texas. Finally falling health cauiei by the
cold climate compelled achange and soSan Antonio gained a specialist who was known by
d of her own citliens and many In tho State
dellcatc.and varied operations and treatment and slnco locating hero the greatest success hss
crowned his effortsand ho fass won thoendurlng gratltudeot hundreds whom ke baa treated
from all parts of the State. A few of them arc
Oeutarrli.
A few remarks In regard to this disease may
Nearly all have tho troublo at some tlmo In the acuKforra and call It a cold. Sometimes they
are awaro they hardly get over one cold until they have another. Tho cold or more properly
speaking tho catarrh then become sub-acute. Dy neglect this runs Into a chronic form.
Sometimes It Is located In tho nose; sometimes the throat or both. Sooner or later it affects
the cars causing frequent ringing or roarlnr In tho ears or other noises. Sometimes violent
Inllamatlon causing nxoruolatlug pain and tho acuteness of hearing la lessened In a
greater or less degree. Very often too It extends up through a llttlo duct from the nose to
oneortho otherandovcnbothcyecauslngsevcral different form of diseases of the eye
Nearly all are familiar with catarrh In the form of bronchitis.
Catarrh In all lis formsand noarly all Its stages
do physicians. They neither prepare themselves
or necessary to treat this troublesome disease as
apprehend the danger they aro la whon thoy consult a physician and he tells them "Ol Its
nothing but a cold" and yet that so-called oold
doarncsa blindness loss of smell loss of voloj of Laryngitis llronchltls and Consumption.
Any or several of these may follow and be caused by a neglected oold. Below are a few names
which I have permission to use who have boen treated by mo with benoflt for Catarrh In aomo
of Its forms since I have been located here t
J. F ltoblnson. Catarrh In throat San Antonio;
San Antonio LiaiiTi.F. Kuhn Catarrh of the head Denver Colorado; Miss Mary Fraser
Catarrh of the throat and ears Nova Scotia; Frank Newton Catarrh of the throat and eyes
San Antonio; Miss B.Loundsuury Catarrh of tho throat and bead San Antonio.
Scores more might bo added to this list that I
only mention one more aa a remarkable lnstanco of bow much good can bo done that class of
Incurable so-called Consumptives. G. W Tye of Leon Springs had Catarrh for some years
In the bead and throat finally tho lungs becamo affoctcd and ho had several bcemorrbages and
had a very bad cough became much emaciated and a confirmed Invalid and was pronounced
by his physician In the last and Incurable stage of consumption. He camo to me for treatment
last winter nearly a year ago. He commenced to gain Bch and went to work la the spring
and I saw no more of him until a few daya ago when he came In bragging how well be wa
and weighed thirty poum's mora than he ever did.
Tiie
A few words now In regard to the ear may
who are sufferers from varied and numerous forms of disease Very few people need urging
to consult an Aurlst when they havo a discharge of matter from It especially If aocompantcd
by a foul smell yet somo will and that too strango as It may sound In this day of onllgbt-
mcnt by advice of physicians but surely It Is never done by ono who understands dlseasos of
this organ.
It Is a lamentablo fact that somo of the oldor
this point) have a prejudice against the stoppago of purulent discharges from tho car but this
Is based upon tho erroneous teachings of old French writers Du Vernoy and Hard. I). 11. St
John Hoosa M. D. LTj. D. Prof cssor of Diseases of Eye and Ear In tho University of New
York City; Surgeon of Manhattan Eyo.and Ear Hospital; Consulting Surgoon of tlrooklyn Eye
and l'.ir Hospital etc. and who Is conslderod the very best authority on the sbbject says In his
last work: "There Is no pathological expcrlenuo
that It la dangerous to stop a discharge from tho ear." Let anyone acquainted with anatomy
consider this fact that thore Is perhaps no part of tho human body which has mora Important
anatomical relations. The cavity of tho tympanaum Is ooverod over by a thin bony plate
which Is In direct communication with tho cerebnl meninges; tho floor Is close to the great
juilar Itslnternal wall Is tho labyrinth wallscovered only by very thin membrane and open
ing Into tho branches of the acoustic norve whllo on the outsldo wo have a tbin membrane
about asthlck as paper. It Is easy to soo tht a continuous destruction of theso parts by sup-
puration unless cured In this part would sooner or later (which It always does) lead to serious
troubles In the brain and sometimes In the lungs or heart I find a large percentage or the
cases having a "running car" have also a cough and when tho ear Is cured the cough Is also
cured. Instead of being worse
Then thero Is another class of cases that sometimes consult the doctor they complain of
ringing or roaring or other noises In tho ear. Ho tells them they have cold and a dose of
quinine perhaps Is given this may be rellovod for a time but sooner or later returns but tho
sufferer had bis fears allayed by recovering partially from tho first attack and so docs not feel
any anxloty this tlmo and tries tho old remedy again. It falls and bo docs etery thing clso they
try and their friends don't sympathize as there Is no externil evidence of the uttering caused
by this condition but this at loast causes them to bunt up an Au rlst who examines the ear
and he finds tho car perhaps so far goto tkatlt Islmposilblsto restore tufull hearing powers
and he must have great skill Indeed to stop tho course of tho disease and keen the hearing
from bolng lost entirely so far do these oases run
If people would go to tho Aurlstovery tlmo anything waa the matter with their ears and
not wait to consult physicians and others thoy would suffer far loss and proscrvo their bearing
much hotter as neary all thedUoitosof tliUorii uro curable oso cclally In tho first stages
Space will only allow a few names for reference
me. Scores moro m Ight bo added t

Tho diseases of tho eye are very numerous
nlzed by the oculist all requiring different treatment In order to cure them and restore good
vision vet nothing shows tho folly ofgolng to
organ than the fact that ho has only sufficiently studied this complicated organ sufficiently
to recognize from threo to a dozen. It Is In this and tho careful application of properly selected
remedies to tho and the dlff crent affeotions of tho eye that the superiority and the success of
tho Oculist consist.
Nearly all tho diseases of tho eye aro curable
and properly treated and attended to In tne earlier stages before It has had time to destroy or
Injure permanently the vision. But those cases that show blemishes and defecta of vision and
blindness so frequently are cases In whloh there has been delay In seeking an Oculist and
valuable time waa waited by trying some domestic remedies or what Is nearly as bad trylog
the ordinary physician.
I do not mean by my remarks above to oondemn or criticise the' general practitioner for
treating Catarrh or diseases of the Eyo or Ear that occur la his practice . It is his duty to glvo
relief to all who are suffering In any and every way possible and no doubt all do the best they
can. But they will all honestly confess that they have not the means In the shape of selected
remedies Instruments nor the time to acquire
What I do want everybody to understand Is that there are a class of specially Instructed and
experienced doctors men who have devoted money time and study to these particular parts
of tho human hody. In order to aoqulre the greatest amount of skill In treating IU affections
and diseases; and people who are suffering with any dlstaso In these organs will as far as
