Is fretting n full and free benefit at the
hands of the State papers generally
Govkiiou IittuNu Is Just now taking
In the free grass country of Northwest
Texas and talking to the sovereigns up
there In a manner that la altogether
commendable.
This campaign of the People's party
which Is the property of General Ilutler
opened Its campaign on Holiday at
Lynn Massachusetts. It will hardly
cause a ripple in the Southwest.
Tint campaign In Ohio Is being vlg'
orously prosecuted on the tariff Issue
and the war against free trade Is being
urged hotly In every Congressional dis
trict. The do.wu wool men in mat mate
are taking active part In the campaign
Hamilton Kisii denies the truthfulness
of the statement thathe Intended to vote
for Cleveland and positively states his
purpose to voto for Maine. This will
have no small Influence In New York
where Mr. Fish Is respected esteemed
admired and confided In for his sterling
quallllea and tound Judgment.
The Shrcveport Times filicides to MrJ.
llelv A. Ixickwood's candidacy ita "the
old pullet party" which la not In the
lenit dignified If It la expressive. There
certainly la no law In tho United Stntea

the honor she should receive fair treat-
Tub Democrats In Now York are not
at all encouraged by tho attitude re-
cently assumed by Tammany respect-
ing Cleveland and almost concede the
State lo lllnlne. Tho Republican defec-
tion luia been greatly magnified by the
Democrats In order to produce an effect
In other Stalea but the truth Is leaking
out.
Why do not the Democrats haul Sena-
tors Cole and JIaxey over the cools for
voting to confirm llr. lllalno as Secre-
tary of the State In JIaroh 1S91? The
Mulligan letters hnd then been live
years beforo the country. If Coko and
Maxeywere not to blame for voting to
mako him Secretory of State the Repub-
licans need feel no hesitation In voting
for lilm for President.
Why should the State University fund
be used In paying tho expenses of the
Law department? We need mechanics
for more than lawyers. The pcorlo
should make tho stoppage of this waste
of the University fund In the payment
of salaries to law professors n question
In the election of members of the Legis-
lature. WorMngmcn farmcra and mer-
clinnls should brand this abuse with
their condemnation. Lawyers aro en-
titled to more privileges than farmers
ond mechanics.
Tub ring "got In Its work" very deftly
at the Democratic primaries and the
nominations are all fixed. The Mexi-
can vote controls tho Demooratlo party
or llexar and three or four men run tho
Mexicans but still there la no ring
about It say the rlngltes. King rule
will ruin any party ond any country
where the people submit to Ita yoke and
wear Ita muzzle. In almost every county
In Texas the Democratlo party Is run by
a ring or clique and the people are
tired of such a state of Ihlngs.
Kx-Maimh i. Pithi.v of Louisiana was
recently Interviewed by a reporter of
tho Indianapolis Journal as to the polit-
ical outlook In Louisiana this year
when ho said! "The Republicans ore
making n vigorous fight In Louisiana
and In lcw of the fact that there Is an
honest Republican majority of at least
JS.OOO In the State and that we Intend
to have a representation on tho election
boards there Is n strong nssurance that
wo will carry the State. Heretofore
the election boards have been composed
exclusively of Democrats and the elec-
tion has been wholly controlled by
them. The great sugar refiners and the
representatives of all business Interests
are showing much concern In the tar) 11
Issue and they are with the Republi
cans. '1 here are nearly 1IK) Confederate
Maine and Logon Protection clubs and
with a fair election there is no doubt
that Louisiana will go Republican."
Mt'LLUiAN stands before tlie country ns
a convicted liar and n base slanderer.
In loTfi he swore that Molne obtained
the letters written by lilm to Fisher
from him (Mulligan) by fraud and force
and destroyed or suppressed those most
criminatory yet Fisher now furnishes
the press with the original letters this
convicta Mulligan of perjury and foul
slander and really looks as though he
ad attempted In 1S7II to blackmail
Maine. The letters now published by
the Ilourbon press were read and com-
mented upon by Mr. Maine before the
Investigating committee and while they
may show some want of delicacy they
fall to convict Mr. Maine of corruption.
The ruling made on the Julian amend-
ment never has been called In question.
It was right and proper In Itself under
the circumstances. Mr. Maine's lettera
show that when this ruling was made
by him he had no acquaintance connec-
tion or dealing with Caldwell. This
disproves the ruling on the Julian
amendment. There was no corruption
In his selling railroad bonds for a com-
mission in Maine but few Democratlo
Congressmen would have declined to
have sold them for a commission. When
tho charges against Maine are "boiled
down" they fall to show any corrup-
tion. Coke and Maxey voted to con-
firm his nomination for Secretary of
State In 1881 which showed they did
not regard lilm as corrupt.
It is not generally understood that
there will be a department of agricul-
ture at tho New Orleans World's fair
such Is the case and Hon. George J
Johnson of Topekn Kansas Is the Su-
perintendent and lie Is without doubt
one of the most efficient men In that po-
sition in the country and will leave
nothing undone that will add to the
complete success of that department.
