The discussion of the proposed rail-
road will now b In order and 111 bene-
fits to the city can be more plainly
shown up.
Tin genuine ticket yesterday was al-
most as scarce as ben's teetb and
ticket or all kinds were flung to the
breeze all over tho city by alleged
workers.
Tin country Is Just as sale now as It
wax before the two Chicago conventions
notwithstanding the din of the cam-
paign. It la remarkable how flat poll-
tics Is when there Is no politics.
Taxis at the World's Fair should be
the next war cry and the representation
should be of the most extensive charac-
ter. The car for San Antonio consign-
ment will be here about the 20lh Inst.
The Society for the Prevention of
Crnelty to Stones Is called upon to pro-
tect the Washington monument from
the desecrating hand of the man who
goes around with n pot and brush adver-
tising somebody's patent medicine.
"It Is suggestive of needed reform"
says the lloerne Register speaking of
the local contest In San Antonio "when
the Express and Liairr the exponents of
the principles of the two opposing par-
ties are driven to unite In routing the
pressnt Incumbents."
Tub election returns this morning In-
dicate that the Democratic Notional
ticket Is elected and that Mr. Cleveland
Is the new President. All the majorities
seem to run to the Democracy and they
have promptly claimed everything In
sight which Is natural. It Is evident
New York has given Governor Cleveland
a majority In which event It will settle
the hopes for the success of Mr. Blaine.
lluon Wasson late paymayter of the
army has been released from the prison
at Leavenworth Kansas and has gone
to Dei Moines Iowa where his parents
reside. While In prison he was never
closely confined and being a good civil
engineer planned and almost superin-
tended a One system of waterworks for
the prison until Its completion. lie was
out much of the time on surveying ex-
peditions locating ground for for a coal
mine that Is being opened for the State
at the prison.
Tim great American citizen who only
a few short hours ago has harrangued
from the etump and advised by the
press no doubt now feels as If he had
i' stepped from the din of a boiler shop
out Into the quiet air. So solemn and In-
different has become the late candidate
whether he be the successful one or
not. .After all It Is only a few who can
get the offices and one almost feels In-
clined to doubt the enthusiasm he felt
before the election when he realizes the
apathy after It Is all over.

Tho result In the county Is gratifying
to the friends of the people and for
square dealing In politics. The l'eople's
ticket as a whole Is conceded ahead by a
small majority; but In view of the fight
that was made and the obstacles to be
overcome any majority Is as Important
as If It had been composed orrour fig-
ures. Uexar county has done nobly and
has set an example for other counties In
Texas as Illustrating what the people
can do when they take matters In their
own Imnds. lint the election Is over.
Let us Imry the dead take care of lbs
dlsabUil bind up their wounds and take
up the thread of tho dally life where It
was left off before the campaign opened
and look to the futuro for local Improve-
ments prosperity and tho general ad-
vancement of both county and city.
Jin. Emoon Hi.ik a traveler In the
holy land arrived recently tn New York
and to tho Sun reporter satdi "I have
come to this country to lecture and to
show that I have solved the mysteries
of the Scriptures. The lost ten tribes
are (he British people; that Is tho Eng-
lish Scottish Irish and Welsh people.
The Normans who conquered England
were the tribe of ISenJatnln. Tho peo-
ple of America are descendants of Ma-
nassch and tho thirteen strips on tho
American flag were jiut there to repre-
sent the thirteen tribes of Israel. When
Falaitlne Is divided up the American
pcoplo will get the top quarter for their
share."
The newspapers of Texas liavo long
suffered an abridgement of their right s
and their dues by the law relating to
legat advertising In which but one class
of legal notices are published and that
an occasional citation. The Illllsboro
Mirror on this subject says : " We
hope to see a law enacted by the next
Legislature requiring tho publication of
all sheriff's sales trustees' sales guar-
dian notices administrator's notices and
in fact all notices that are Issued for In-
formation. Tho present mode of stick-
ing a written notice tn three conspicu-
ous (?) places In the connty Is nonsense
and In many Instances Is the means of
defrauding widows and orphans and
good citizens out of their property.
There are In all counties a few who
watch tho walls or doors of n court house
for 'bargains.' "
A tax Is proposed on bachelors In the
next French budget. The preamble
reads: "Considering tho growing tie-
creass In the population In Frnncorfl
has becomo neccssimaWTigsoTtnx on
all slnglettiChTover years or ago of
UtrTnaTesex." A writer who Is well
versed on the subject adds: "Somo of
the causes of this dcorease are that no
Frenchman under 25 can marry with
out the consent of his parents. This
consent Is Invariably withheld If the girl
Is portionless. On the other hand If
the girl be well provided for her kins-
folk will not only not let her marry un-
less the man's marrlago portion be tn
proportion to hers but they will effect-
ually prevent all possibility of her mak-
ing the acquaintance of a poor man. In
France an Invitation to a private dinner
or ball Is generally preceded by an In-
quiry Into tho financial position of tho
recipient of such an Invitation which
for thoroughness will beat anything and
evcrythlngdetectlvcs In London or Paris
could accomplish."
A coiiresposdent writes to the Itock-
port Transcript regarding a route to
deep water for the San Antonio and
Aransas Pass railroad as follows i "It Is
plain to our mind that If the directors
of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass
railroad wish to find a short line and one
attended with comparatively little ex-
pense to reaoh deep water they would
order n survey to be made from Itock-
port crossing Puerto bay at Its mouth
and St. Mary's bay nt n point two miles
above St. Mary's lloth places have
good bottoms and only require an In-
spection by (he company to adopt the
route. These bays are quite shallsw
and will not require much additional
expense to cross the road by them A
glance nt the map will show many miles
can be saved by this line and many dol
lars retained In the company's hands by
adopting It. There Is no better way to
deep water than down the chain of
Islands from llookport to the light-
house and besides there are nlno feet
of water up to the wharf at Itockport
which will prove quite an advantage to
the road tn Its construction."
"A ww years ago" says the Now
York Tribune "some American critics
who clearly bad not freed themselves
from Old World Ideas began to say that
the American farmer was becoming too
extravlgant and that his profusion was
the cause of hard times. It seemed that
he would not rest content with n purely
animal life. He wanted comfort In his
surroundings. Ho wanted education
for his children newspapers and books
for himself. He even aspired to a carpet
for his parlor and a piano for his daugh
ters. All this the critics thought was
very sad nnd plain proof ol degenera
tion In our agriculturists. Hut It was
nothing of the kind. It was simply tho
evolution of the American Idea. The
farmer was right to seek comfort and
Intellectual nourishment and education
for his children and music and cheer-
ful and beautiful surroundings. It Is
the people who set their Ideal high who
come nearest to attaining It and De-
mocracy would be a mockery and a de-
lusion If It did not stimulate the masses
to better things and make them discon-
tented with sordid nnd narrow modes of
living. The spread of the American
Idea cannot be hindered either. It has
given to this country Its greatness and
strength and Its success on this conti-
nent Is a guarantee for Its propagation
wherever the majority are still unen-
franchised. Leisure to think and to act;
a margin for Intellectual expansion; op-
portunity to develop manhood and wom-
anhood; these are the demands which
the people everywhere are making or
about to make because they know that
in America the Idea of man's destiny and
rights has been largely worked out to a
satisfactory conclusion. Nor Is there a
possibility that the leaven of the Amer-
ican Idea will cease to work until It has
leavened the whole mass of the Old
World."
THE DELIGHT OP THE DUDES.
Mow tho Dear Creatures Support

"Nearly everybody carries a cane
now" said a dealer In miscellaneous
gent's furnishing goods ton LimiT re-
port r recently. "We sell a great many
of them of every conceivable design
and style more than we ever carried
before."
"What are the styles mostly sold and
do the styles varyr" asked the reporter.
"Yes and no. In fancy sticks we are
always receiving something new. These
are the canes that the young men carry.
Then there Is a walking stick that we
always have told and always will I
suppose. It Is the same now as It was
twenty years ago I mean tho plain
ordinary every day cano which men
carry as a stall for genuine aid In walk-
ing. It Is a plain stick with a plain
right angled handle. You never see
dudes carry them. They are used al-
most exclusively by old men."
"What kind of canci) are tho most pop-
ular?" "Of course we sell more cheap canes
than any other kind If that Is what you
mean. Wo sell hundreds of them rang-
ing In price from two bits to n dollar
to every one of a high price. It Is won-
derful how cheap canes can be made.
For fifty cents we can furnish a pretty
article-a nice bamboo with a good horn
handle In thts grade there is every
concelvablo style manufactured. Somo
of the heads are great. Of course the
buyer looks mostly at the head lie se-
lects something as odd and unique as
he can pick out. Now here" continued
the dealer showing a very handsome
cane "Is n nice dressy cane good
enough for a gentleman to carry
and heavy enough for good
service at night or during eleotton times.
It Is composed entirely of leather and Is
loaded with a steel rod and lead. Tho
material Is new and makes this cane
very unique.
"And the dudes?"
"Ob they buy something dainty you
know. They want a head about tho
right size for the mouth and a stick as
thin nnd flexible as they can And."
"How Is the trade In really valuable
goods?"
"Small but steady. Gold heads are
In constant demand and are used a lire-
time. Then In hammered silver we hnvo
pretty designs. Some of them are real-
ly works of art. Moro gold-headed canes
are urougui jor guts ii.an anyming cise.

'"""'What are tho most popular woods?"
"There are many of them. Orange
wood bamboo and rattan nre used ex-
tensively. Then there are heavy woods
that are used by men who want a club
for night duty. Here Is a stick made of
snakewood. Just take hold of It; heavy
ns lead. Isn't It? A crack with that
would do more damage than a police-
man's locust."
"How about loaded canes?"
"We have them. Here Is one with a
ball of lead In the head and a steel rod
tlirough the stlok. Here Is another
with a rattan stick. Oh yes we sell a
good many of them. Hero aro canes
with a silver plate for the owner's name
These are popular too."
"How about sword canes?"
"We have them too though In small
quantity and they are sold very slowly.
We sell a good many to Mexican gentle-
men who do not care to carry a heavy
pocket pistol and yet feel tho need of
some effective weapon. Here Is one
with a finely carved Ivory handle and
as Innocent a looking stick as ever was
made. Here "touching a secret spring
and drawing forth the handle at-
tached to which was n small
three cornered stllletto about 12 or 18
Inches In length with a very sharp
point and twisted like a gimlet "here
Is the spring you see which Is touched
by a very slight pressure of the linger.
A wound with that weapon would bleed
Internally and would be sure death
whero a bullet would fall."
"Anything else In canes?" asked the
reporter.
"Yes" sold the dealer picking up an
odd looking bamboo cane with a China-
man's head on It. "Here Is something
elso In canes" nnd he touohed a spring
nnd a stream or cold water struck the
reporter's forehead and revived him
greatly. "This cane" said the denier
chuckling "Is for the practical Joker
nnd we sell a great many of them until
they nre pretty well known nnd then
something new Is brought on for the
Joker."
"Anything else?"
"Yes here Is one. Try this nnd see
If It ts about the right length for you"
handing the reporter a nice looking
stick with a fancy knob. The reporter
tried It thumped It on the floor and
leaned on It and then dropped It and
scratched his palm while the dealer's
cacblnnatlon rang out merrily. The
head or the cane held a very small needle
which when pressed very slightly pick-
ed tho hand nt a moment when not ex-
pooled. s. s. rioyd k Co.
