QUIET MELODRAMA
SENSATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS
IN REGARD TO IT.
How a Young Lady's Sudden De
parture with Relatives Pro-
duced a Sensation.
A very quiet little sensation took
place tn this city last week which I
causing considerable comment In high
circles. Tho sensation embraces a
tangled plot with circumspect execu
tion. A beautiful heiress said to be
heroine ot an abduction a tender moth-er-ln-law
triumphant relatives law
yers hackmen railroad men midnight
rides etc. The scene Is laid In San
Antonio and other cities -or distant
States. A Light reporter has collected
the following information In regard to
the matter: A wealthy widow of this
city was tho mother of a very amiable
son- who had attained man's estate.
while on a visit to a distant State some
time ago ho met and fell In love
with ii beautiful young lady whoie
soul was congenial to hit own.
On the young man's return to San An-
tonio a correspondence was begun by
the young folks and shortly after anoth
er trip was taken by the young man to
where tho young lady was then visiting
a wealthy aunt who Is tho widow of n
generalof the late war. The weddlngof
tho young people consummated anil
the happy bride-groom and his lovely
bride returned to San Antonio. Short
was their married bliss though a hap-
pier couple and moro loving could not
be found. I'erfectly enraptured with
each other time flew on until death cut
short their happiness and plunged the
young wife Into deep misery by the tak
ing off of her husband.
Now followed days and weeks of grief
mingled with trouble from another
source. As soon as the news of her hus-
band's death reached the young bride's
relatives they began urging her
to come home. She refused and
preferred to live with ber husband's rel-
atives and be near her husband's grave
which she often visited and watered the
flowers whloh grew thereon with tho bit-
ter tears of a young wife's bereavement.
Aa she la the nossesser. In her own
right of a fortune of some $!0000 or
SW)000 which has been In the
hands of her uncle as guardian
the mother-in-law declares they
have sinister motives In wishing her
to return and relinquishing certain
rights and titles to her estates which
are now In litigation and which
her uncle has the control of. Be
fore the marriage of the young people
the lady says this uncle com-
pelled them to sign a paper un-
der pain of breaking off the marriage;
said paper the purport of which In Its
many legal forms she did not then
know and which was a document re-
linquishing all claims by her to her for-
tune and vesting It entirely with her
uncle. On the return to San Antonio
lawyers were consulted who decided to
contest this paper for the young lady
ana a aeiense was uegun. rinuing lue
young bride very obdurate In refusing
to return to her old home her relatives
determined to come after her and
about four weeks ago her aunt
and a lawyer drove to her resi-
dence and the lawyer attempted to
carry the young woman In bis arms to a
nacic wuicn was in waning at
the gate. This was frustrated by
the timely arrival of the eldest son
of the old ladr. and an embar
rassing explanation of the proceeding
was inaue uy mo lawyer mar no
was a cousin of the lady and was (Imply
embracing her. This ended the matter
for a time but lust Tuesday the sister of
tne young wiaow arriveu in tue city
with the aunt and a young lady. They
registered at the hotel under assumed
names. The sister visited the youne
widow Wednesday morning and In-
vited ber to go with her to'the hotel.
She accepted. In the evening a relative
called for his young sister-in-law at the
hotel to bring her home when bo was
told that the ladles had departed to
spend the night at the residence of a
relative outsiue tue cuy.
He returned to this cltv and consulted
a lawyer and they proceeded to the rel-
atives' home In a hack. They could not
gain an audience however and called
the next day when they were told that
the bird had flown
lllohlv enrneed at this nrooeedlnc.
they returned to this city believing that
an abduction had taken place nnd the
belief waa strengthened by an anony-
mous note received stating that a young
lady was put on tne train in an uncon
scions condition.
The other side of the story Is that the
young wife after her marriage was
Kept In abject fear by ber mother-ln-law
and was not permitted to seo her
relatives. That she wanted to leave
and return home but dared not exnress
her wishes. That when her relatives
arrived she flew to them and is now un
willing to return home.-
