Sherman visited the War Department
this morning and spent some time la
calling upon the Secretary "of War Gen-
eral Sheridan and other officials. An

formation as to the progress of the
movement for the relief of General
Grant. "I can't tell you anything about
It" replied General Sherman "except
that the matter la In strong hands. It Is
a very complicated case" he continued
"and no one can tell the result but. as I
said strong men are Interested In It.
Prominent lawyers are looking after
General Grant's Interests and they will
be protected as far as possible."
Qnirox January 5. The Baltimore
and Ohio officers havo arrested Mary
Beck on a charge of being the person
who wrecked the St. Louis express near
this place last Wednesday with a loss
of two lives and much destruction of
property. The woman has admitted her
guilt. Two weeks ago her husband was
arrested by officers of the road for rob-
bery of freight oars and since then Mrs.
Deck has been going about In male attire
seeking revenge on the company for his
arrest. On W ednesday she decided on
wrecking the train and with that object
In view placed a bar of iron In the
switch frog.
Qii.vnsTO' January 5. Johnson Fori-
ter an old citizen of Galveston and for
many years a prominent cattleman and
live stock dealer was arrested on Satur-
day evening on charge of embezzle-
tnentof the sum of $C03. It seems that
Forster sold a ear load of hogs consigned
to him by Weaver A Chumley of IIIco
Texas and failed to settle with his
principals hence tho suit for embezzle-
ment. Forster appeared before the Re-
corder's court to-day and gave bond for
his appearance. The grand Jury meets
to-morrow and It Is understood Fors-
ter's case will be considered at once.
Forster has been financially embarrassed
for some tlmo past. He stood well In
this community and the present pro-
ceedings against him are a surprise to
his many friends
