The much-anticipated
and feared 2006 Atlantic
Hurricane Season proved
milder than first expected
thanks to the reoccurrence
of El Niiio -a periodic
phenomenon that disrupts
normal ocean-atmosphere
interactions and affects
weather all over the planet.
El Niiio usually causes
increased wind shear in
the tropical regions of the
Atlantic where most hurri-
canes are born. Wind shear
interferes with the transfer
of heat energy from evapo-
rating ocean waters to the
storm, or more simply: cuts
the fuel supply to the engine.
The 2006 season had
nine named storms and five50'

Shurricanes, two of them major. Noneo
the storms hit the nation's Atlantic cos
only the 11th time this has occurred
since 1945.
Forecasters with the National Hur
ricane Center (NHC) originally predice
in May 2006 that there could be 13 to1
named storms, with eight to 10 of thos
becoming hurricanes. Of these, four t i
were predicted to become major storms
But as the 2006 Hurricane Season po
gressed with little tropical storm activiy
forecasters revised their estimates, preit
ing 12 to 15 named storms with seventh
nine becoming hurricanes -- three to fu
of these becoming major storms.
Ironically, the forecaster's revised 20
prediction was almost identical to the20
pre-season forecast that fell terriblyshr
of reality.
The long-term annual average is 11
named storms and six hurricanes, wittw
becoming major storms.
NHC forecasters say warmer wates
more moisture in the air and other coni
tions in the Atlantic Ocean have led t120' 115' 11Y 105 i00" 95' 90' 85' 80' 75' 70' 855 80' 55- 50' 45' 40' 35' 30' 25' 20' 15 1D' 5' WeitS0' East 5'

increased tropical storm activity that could
:: of continue for another decade.
oast Jill Hasling, president of Weather Re-
search Center, Inc., in Houston, believes
major hurricane activity will be just a bit
r-e higher than the NHC prediction for the
next few years.
"From 2001 to 2011, you have a chance
ose. on average of five Category 3 or Category
to six 4 hurricanes over the oil leases in the Gulf
ms. of Mexico," she told about 125 par-
pro- ticipants at the 30th annual International
vity' Marine/Offshore Industry Outlook Con-
edict- ference, hosted by the Texas Sea Grant
College Program in Houston in April
four 2006.
Hasling came to her
conclusion after study-
ing storm activity dating
short gg
back to 1851. She grouped
1 the storms by 30-year time
spans and noticed an interest-
ing decadal trend. The major- 11
ity of storm activity alternated
