THE BIBLE
Solid Ground
OVERCOMING EVIL
W ITH GOOD
One of the hardest things
for a Christian to do, it seems,
is to say and do good things to
those who are our enemies.
When someone strikes us or
says something which hurts or
harms 'us, our natural reaction
is to do something in retalia-
tion or in return. This is human
nature.
But, the Bible tells us that
in order to be a true Christian,
we must OVERCOME our
human nature and replace it
with God’s Holy Spirit. When
our heart is changed or con-
verted to GOD’S WAY, we no
longer want to say or do evil
things. In fact, our love for
God and our fellowman should
be so OUTGOING that we even
LOVE OUR ENEMIES.
Christ Jesus COMMANDED
His disciples - and that in-
cludes all - to love their
enemies. He became an example
for us when He turned the other
cheek when His enemies were
punishing Him with slaps and
whips. Even when they finally
crucified Him and He was suf-
fering bitterly on the cross,
He said, “Father FORGIVE
them, for they know not what
they do.”
Are we as Christians striv-
ing to follow this example set
by our Lord and Saviour? Or
do we try to GET EVEN with
those who run down our
character or even hurt us
financially?
Let me tell you from ex-
perience, brother and sister,
that its mighty hard to TURN
THE OTHER CHEEK to our
enemies. Yet this is exactly
what we’re to do.
In Luke 6:27-29 we read,
“Love your enemies, do good
to those who HATE you, bless
those who CURSE, pray for
those who ABUSE you. To him
who STRIKES you on the cheek,
offer the other also; and from
him who TAKES away your
cloak do no withhold your coat
as well.’’
Christ goes on in this chapter
to explain why it is so important
that we do get to the point that
we can love our enemies: “If
you love those who love you,
what credit is that to you?
For even sinners love those
who love them. And if you do
good to those who do good to
you, what credit is that to you?
For even sinners do the same.’’
Yes, it’s EASY to do some-
thing good for someone who does
something good for you. But
it’s another matter when it
concerns a deed of kindness we
have a chance to do for same-
one who has acted or said un-
kindly things about us.
Just remember what Christ
said. Even non-believers act
kindly toward those who do so
to them.
God understands human
nature. He knows that people
who intentionally do or say evil
things about others don’t know
how to react when their EVIL
DEEDS are REPAID with kind-
ness. Usually they are almost
dumfounded. At first they
wonder if something is wrong
with this Christian person. But
later they may even begin to
wonder if there might not be
something wrong with them-
selves.
Christ says we can over-
come evil with good instead of
letting evil overcome us
(Romans 12:21). “For by sp
Sincere Thank You
I wish to thank my friends,
neighbors, and taxpayers of the
public school district for sup-
porting me for school trustee.
The election is over. I hope
that all the people of the school
district will join me in sup-
porting and trying to improve
our public school system.

doing you will heap BURNING
COALS on his head” (Romans
12:20).
Our Lord also in that same
chapter instructs us on other
things concerning living in
peace and harmony:
“Bless those who persecute
you; bless and do not curse
them. Rejoice with those who
rejoice, weep with those who
weep. Live in harmony with one
another; do not be haughty, but
associate with the lowly; never
be conceited. Repay no one evil
for evil, but take thought for
what is NOBLE IN THE SIGHT
OF ALL. If possible, so far as
it depends upon you, live peace-
ably with all. Beloved, never
avenge yourselves, but leave it
to the wrath of God; for it is
written, “VENGENCE IS MINE,
I WILL REPAY, says the Lord.”
(Romans 12:14-19).
Yes, it is hard to love your
enemies. But it isn’t impos-
sible. “For with God NOTHING
is impossible.”
You can begin today in over-
coming evil with good. Just
smile when someone frowns
at you. Speak well of those who
haven’t treated you with the
same respect. Give to those
who need your help, but maybe
haven’t done anything to deserve
it.
Then you will have begun
to love your enemies. And we
must BEGIN if we plan to end
up with God in the eternal
mansions.
