Summertime means picnic fun Fill the basket with this low-fat,
low-cholesterol, finger-licking chicken Add biscuits and coleslaw and
have a day you'll remember
Taxes have been raised in 30 states
this year, but Texas has bucked the
trend and is among 11 states that
actually lowered them
Taxes were raised in all regions of
the country, according to a report on
state tax activity released by the
National Conference of State
Legislature.
In New England, where an
economic slowdown has hit states
that only a few years ago were
booming, five of six states raised
taxes, and only Maine cut them
Broad increases in income taxes
were enacted in Illinois, Con-
necticut, North Dakota, Montana
and Vermont
The most serious state fiscal
difficulties were in the Northeast,
including New England states. New
York and New Jersey Those states
raised spending and cut taxes during
several years of economic growth,
only to see their revenues fall short
of expectations
The only states where taxes were
cut by one percent or more besides
Texas were Hawaii, Wisconsin, New
York, Louisiana and Virginia
Taxes were cut less than one
percent in South Dakota, Iowa,
Main, Idaho and Maryland
