MONTEVIDEO, June 21 -(-
The heavy United States cruiser
Quincy sailed into Montevideo har-
bor yesterday on a good will cruise
that the cheering waterfront crowd
interpreted as symbolizing the Unit-
rd States armed guardianship of
the western hemisphere.
The visit was timed by coincid-
ence if nothing more to a week
during which Uruguay, the "Achil-
les heel” of South America, clamp-
ed down on fifth-columnists and
looked to her stronger neighbors for .
a cooperative program for Ameri-
can defense
Informed sources said Uruguay
would throw wholehearted support
to any mutual plan for American
defense.
Congress is expected to act Mon-
day on a government committee re-
port disclosing evidences of a deep-
seated plot by nazi sympathizers to
set up national socialism in Uru-
guay.
Nine German leaders were de-
tained without formal charges. Twe
others were heard and released.
Officers of the Quincy were re-
ceived by President Baldomir, and
members of the crew, given shore
leave, and mingled with Montevideo
crowds. The reception was enthusi-
astic, in contrast to that accorded
Italian sailors who came ashore re- ,
cently. They were targets for ar
egg barrage by anti-fascist demon-
strators.

McDonald Urges New
Crops for Texas
AUSTIN. June 21— (P) —War-
born uncertainties invite adoption
of a long range Texas agriculture
program looking to introduction of
new crops, agricuture Commission-
er J. E McDonald said here today.
He suggested as possibilities:
Tung trees, now thriving in some
southern states.
Increased production of soy and
castor beans.
Exploitation of the Guayule
plant now growing wild in Texas
and adaptable in the production of
rubber
Development of the Candelella
plant which produces a high grade •
wax
McDonald added the federal gov-
ernment might be prevailed on to
establish experimental laboratories
to develop industrial use of many
other plants which now perform no
service to mankind
