With 31. percent of the alloted
contract time already consumed,
the $126,000 project at the east

"Rain, and resultant mud, has

less than 20 are now at work," he
added.
TWO WEEKS BEHIND TIME

Evacuation at the site is com-
plete except for the filtered water
line and for about half of the
water filters, on which digging is
now proceeding, he reported.
Walls are finished on the clear
well, and floor and roof slabs are
being laid. Two-thirds of wall foot-
ing is in place on the sedimentary
basin.
Pipeline to connect the filtra-
tion system has been placed from
the plant west to a point west of
Ash street, about mid-way be-
tween Plum and Ash streets, the
engineer added.
Water from Fort Phantom Hill
reservoir will be turned into city
mains when the plant is complete.
Lake Kirby is now supplying all
water to the city, with the flow
from Lake Abilene going at
Camp Barkeley.

Afternoon
Nobody ever has told me why
June is known as the month of
brides, only that and nothing more.
It is true that there are many
weddings in June, and consequently
many June brides. But the average
wedding has a bridegroom, too I
demand to know why he doesn’t get
some credit.
The only people who don't have
a bridegroom for every bride are
polygamists. These are very scarce,
even in the United States where
numerous young men and gala have
a hard time making up their re-
spective minds as to the victim of
their matrimony.
If you doubt the importance of
a bridegroom at a wedding, try to
remember a ceremony where one
failed to appear. That is a happen-
stance that takes the wedding out
of the society column and puts it
on page 1 of the main news sec-
tion.
Possibly indicating the groom's
real standing in the scheme of
things, he arrives on the scene
first. The bride arrives last, and it
would not be surprising sometime
to see the rest of the crowd get
tired of waiting, and leave.
Some think this custom typifies
the remainder of the couple’s life-
he getting ready first and fidget-
ing while she applies the final
touches of beauty amplifier.
Granting, to avoid argument, that
June may be the superior month
to enter in upon marital bliss, cur
girl Guinevere Gniglfluger of the
society pages can’t understand why
all of them will pick the same day,
such as June 15.
There were so many weddings
scheduled for that date that she
predicted all the country's minis-
ters would be hoarse by nightfall:
that the supply of old shoes might
become so depleted as to cause a
run on charitable organizations
store rooms: and so much rice used
as to create a bottleneck in the de-
fense program
Not to mention the need of char-
tering a special train to Niagara
Falls.
United States senator, Gov. W. Lee
O'Daniel encountered competition
at Houston last night in the form
of a barbecue.
The governor spoke at Buffalo
Stadium, not far from Herman
park, where a crowd attending a
barbecue was addressed by Harris
county officials in behalf of Con-
gressman Lyndon Johnson, a rival
senatorial candidate.
O’Daniel declared he had settled
the social security problem in Tex-
as and now desired to go to Wash-
ington to obtain more federal funds
for old-age pensioners He also said
he had solved the national defense
labor question in Texas by procur-
ing passage of the first anti-vio-
lence strike law in the nation and
wanted an opportunity to introduce
a similar act in congress.
Earlier, the governor expressed
confidence in an address at Gal-
veston that the common citizens
who elected him governor would
send him to Washington as sena-
tor.
In a speech at Austin, Johnson
asserted that ‘Texas wants commu-
nism and naziism stamped out of
this country. Your president force-
fully and effectively did a real job
today when he ordered the nazi
consulates closed. This is better
than talk "
claimed at Wichita Falls that he
was making more speeches than
anyone in the senate race, which
he said was between him and O’-
Daniel.

There actually are as many wed-
dings in December as in June, the
difference being that they don't
get the attention in the winter
month. With Santa Claus just
around the corner, a bride and
groom are just like a couple of
prelimary boys, as compared with
their main event ranking in June.
• ••
From a mercenary viewpoint, a
couple might do better to wed some
month other than June, which fol-
lows graduation days The latter
are an annual reminder to an ad-
ult that he never runs out of
younger relatives, and that they
are making intellectual progress
Perhaps October would be a fa-
vorable time, being well spaced in
relation to Christmas, graduation
and/ the golden wedding anniver-
sary of Aunt Florentine and Uncle
Egbert.
New Truck Permit
Required by State
AUSTIN, June 17.—All of the
more than 1.200 transporters of spe-
cial ommodities in Texas, repre-
senting more than half of the com-
mercial truckers in the state, must
make application for a new per-
mit within sixty days from June 4.
as the result of the signing last
week by Governor O'Daniel of the
new specialized motor carrier act,
Lynn B Shaw, general manager of
Texas Motor Transportation asso-
ciation announced today.
The act sets up a new type of
carrier, the “specialized motor car-
rier,’ in place of the old carrier of
"special commodities.” By pro-
visions of the new law, all carriers
who were under “special commod-
ity" permits, transporting house-
hold goods, wool, mohair, livestock,
oil field equipment, farm machin-
ery, ased office equipment, live-
stock feedstuff, milk, timber in its
natural state, and grain, must now
make application for a new certifi-
cate of convenience and necessity,
the transportation official said. The
new rertificate, if applied for with-
in sixty days of June 4. will be
given to these carriers who can
prove they held such special com-
modity permits prior to or on Jan- |
uary 1. of this year.
