APS DOPKING DESCRIBES
FALL OF ORMOC TO 77TH
(Editor’s note: This delayed
dispatch by Associated Press
War Correspondent Al Dopking
is the first eyewitness account
of the capture of Ormoc, stra-
tegic Japanese reinforcement
port He is the only correspond-
ent on western Leyte,)
By AL DOPKING
ORMOC. Leyte. Dec. 12—(Delay-
ed)— (PP)—Smoldering ruins of Or-
moc lie behind the hard-hitting 77th
U. S. infantry division tonight as it
fans out northward and eastward
of this key port town on Leyte’s west
coast

of Liberty division fought
Mercury Starts
Climb in Texas
By United Press
Generally rising temperatures
were expected, to continue Wednes-
throughout yesterday — some-
times hand to hand and from
house to house—to take It.
The attack began at 9 30 a m
with an earth-shaking artillery,
mortar and rocket barrage. Two
gunboats shuttle back and forth
offshore spraying the town with a
cascade of hot lead Two large fires
were burning as infantrymen enter-
ed Ormoc's outskirts.
Standing on a stretch of high
ground where he could see Or-
moc, Bruce personally directed
the attack of his division, com-
posed mostly of men from New
York state.
These veterans of the battle of
Guam already had had a tough
fight the day before when they
smashed Japanese defenses at
Camp Downes, old Filipino army
camp just south of Ormoc
The Japanese tried to break up
the advance with air power before
and after the Americans had
launched the attack. One enemy
plane, hit by a P47 a few minutes
after it had strafed our troops,
could be seen plummeting into the
Camotes sea in a burst of Dames.

Officers said American casualties

heavier. Medics are working tonight |
