Field GI Returns
As Paratrooper
Just three months after the day
he left, Cpl. Victor T. Ekland, form-
er headquarter reproduction clerk,
returned to Abilene Army Air field
last Thursday a member of the
paratroopers. . ,
Looking healthy and full of
praises for his outfit, Ekland visited
friends at the field for a day before
leaving for Loe Angeles and a 19-
day furlough. _
Ekland and S-Sgt. John R. Dan-
telson were the first two enlisted
men to depart from this station for
training in the paratroopers, and
win paratrooper's wings. .
The former AAF GI was high in
his praises for the "troops" and
summed up the -training period as
“lots of fun.” .
His "lots of fun" included, he later
told, five qualifying jumps.
•The first three jumps," he re-
called, "were at 1,200 feet. The
jumping is the toughest ptrt. I
wasn't scared—maybe a bit tense
because it was something I had
waited ao long for. Anyway, after
the first three there was nothing
to it.” .
His first night jump was at 1.000
feet. The final qualifying Jump was
at 800 feet. . .
“We had all that equipment and

enemy planes, and three fresh at.
tacks on Iwo Jima in the Volcano
Islands, were reported simultaneous-
ly by Adm. Chester W. Nimitz at
Pearl Harbor.
General MacArthur gave Am-
erican casualties for the Philip-
pines invasion up to the middle
of this week as 10,409—2,176
killed, 7,976 wounded and 257
missing. The Japanese thus are
losing eight men for every Yank.
MacArthurs figures, covering the
Leyte and Samar island fighting,
listed 33,801 abandoned Japanese
dead, some 30,000 drowned in the
smashing of ten reinforcement con-
voys, 253 prisoners and an estimated
18,500 dead inside enemy lines.
Doughboys of the 77th division
driving north from Ormoc, seaport
on western Leyte captured last
Sunday, seized the enemy's main
supply depots one mile from the city
after severe fighting, the Friday
communique said. The 32d division
maintained pressure at the north of
the Ormoc corridor, where thous-
ands of crack Nippon troops are
bottled up.
In the Navy raid on Luzon, 77
Japanese planes were destroyed on
the ground and 14 in combat as the
carrier aircraft raked airdromes and
shipping in the Manila area and
'elsewhere. .
The stuck, on Wednesday (U.
S. Time), virtually dovetailed
with a raid by Army bombers
based on Leyte.
Iwo Jima was raided Sunday,
Monday and Tuesday by landbased
Liberators and Lightning fighters,
all of which returned despite heavy
antiaircraft fire. Iwo Jima is an Im-
portant base on the B» route be-
tween Saipan and Tokyo.
Haha Jima, 650 miles south of
Tokylo was bombed Sunday, and
other bombers hit tiny Marcus is-

THE MEAT
NIrTTIVAAT
SITUATION
DECEMBER, 1944
The meat supply for civilians has improved
slightly this month; but, even so, you may not
always be able to get the quantity, quality,
kind and cut you desire.
The reason is: tremendous quantities are go-
ing, sometimes on short notice, to feed our G.I.
Joas, our G.I. Janes and our fighting allies.
Nobody would change that, and military de-
mands for meat are expected to continue heavy.
According to 1944 estimates based on U. S. De-
partment of Agriculture figures, livestock producers
and meat packers will have provided the all-time
world’s record total of more than 25 billion pounds
of meat this year. (Compared with 18,412,000,000
pounds, 1934-1943 average.)
1944
1934-1943
AVERAGE
More than 30 per cent of the mast produced
in 1944 has gone to our fighters and allies-
most of it beef and pork.
The government requires the setting aside
of 60 per cent of the tap four grades of beef
which meet Army style specifications.
The government la also taking IS percent
of the extremely lean cuts of beef ordinarily
used for sausage and canned meats, and any-
where from 37 to 78 per cent of the many
popular cuts of pork.
The answer for the housewife is to learn available
cuts which she may never have tried before, and to
cooperate with her meatman in using the meats
which be has from day to day.
. All of these cuts have the same complete, high-
oot -quality proteins which make meat "a yardstick
of protein foods."
