started mulling over the best backs
seen this year.
By the time we reached the of-

that Billy Murphey of Abilene top-

Billy wasn't as impressive as ex-
pected. Then bang! During the last
four games he was the roughest
155 pounder we ever saw in a suit.
He hit with the power of one 30
pounds heavier and his elusiveness
left little to be desired.
We saw J W Thompson, the
wildest of Odessa's Bronchos, only
once, and he was great' Thompson,
however, isn't as versatile as Mur-

The Texas Aggies are the boys
who hold the Southwest confer-
ence football championship at the
tip of their fingers. But they bet-
ter grab quickly because the Uni-
versity of Texas is moving in.
Texas A and M. can—if it rises
to the heights (and it will have
to be to a loftier peak than any
time before)—snarl the confer-
ence race until even the Cotton
bowl won't know it.
On the Texas-A. and M. game at
College Station Thursday depends
whether Saturday's battles be-
tween Texas Christian and South-
ern Methodist at Fort Worth and
Rice and Baylor at Houston will
mean more than just gridiron
jousts between arch rivals
Texas can end the agony by beat-
ing A. and M.—which the Long-
horns will be favored to do. By
so doing, Texas would be in the
Cotton bowl a third time in four
M and the winner of the Texas
Christian-Southern Methodist
game would be certain to finiah in
a tie for the lead. If Rice beat
Baylor that would make the situa-
tion a foursome.
Texas was sent into undisputed
first place last week by being idle.
The Longhorns watched Fort
Worth where Texas Christian
edged out Rice 14-13 to knock the
Owls down to a tie for second
place. Southern Methodist was
staying in the race—and a tie with
Rice. Texas Christian and A. and
M for the runner-up spot—by wal-
loping Baylor 34-0.
