Why Southern Farmers Should Vote
Against Harrison.
Because he has favored tariff legisla-
tion which uas had a tendency to re-
duce the markets for agricultural pro-
ducts. Although there has been a
great abundance iu this country and a
famine abroad the value of the agri-
cultural products exported iu 1891
was $642751344 while iu 1881 it was
$730394943 or nearly $100000000
more. On the other hand our ex-
ports of manufactures have nearly
doubled In that time so that a protec-
tive tariff such as Mr. Harrison favors
cuts down the profits of the farmers
and restricts their market. Because
he favors the infamous force bill.
For these and manv other reasons
no Southern farmer can afford to vote
for Mr. Harrison or his -aider mate-
rial}'. indirectly" Mr. Weaver.
The Treasuary Department has no-
tified the World’s Fair directors that
a duty will be collected on all foriegn
exhibits if they are exhibite I on the
outside of the fair grounds.
Southern men do not throw your
votes away on Weaver or any Third
party candidate for Congress. If you
do it will be rendering “material aid
indirectly.’’ to the Republicans.
The Hot Springs Graphic hereto-
fore a morning daily has changed in-
to an afternoon paper. No use in
running a morning paper in a small
sized citv like Hot Springs or Texar-
kana.
The report that Cleveland is already
selecting his cabinet is not true.
While he feels sanguine of his elec-
tion he has entirely too much regard
for the proprieties of the situation
than to act in such unseemly haste.—
Ex.
Poker .Jack McClure is badly
mistaken if he thinks he can rule Ar-
kansas election through Federal su-
pervisors. Out people are not to be
trampled upon by such a skunk and
he will know this after the Bth of No-
vember.
A Bbi.nkley man has invented a
monster swing—a wheel two hundred
feet in diameter—and proposes to
operate it nt the World's fair. With
swinging baskets be expects io give
visitors a tine view of the exposition
from a high altitude.
Democrats can not suffer them
selves to grow indifferent in the com- j
Ing election. The opposition w : )l i
turn out to a man and with bulldoz-1
ing Federal supervisors will try to
win by such foul means. Go out and
take your stand determined to vote
for Cleveland and Mcßae.
THE ROAD CONVENTION.
The State Hoad Convention which
met at Little Rock last Thursday
was not very largely attended. Some
splendid papers on improvement of
dirt roads were read. It waj a good
start in the right direction. The fol-
lowing well timed resolutions were
adopted:
Resolved That it is the sense of
this convention that the state of Ar-
kansas should connect each city of I
the first-class together with the coun-
ty seat of each county in the state.
with a state road and that to this end
the state should by and through com-'
petent engineers locate co istrucl and I
maintain such roads that in Hie o n-
struclion and maintenance > f said
state roads the state should pr< vi li-
the means and use to the best advan-
tage the convict labor of the st Ac.
Resolved That the rondso’her th: n
state roads be known as county roads
the width of all roads state ami coun-
ty to be fixed by statute and that
when it is deemed advisable by the
county judge with a majority of the
justices of the peace of the county
the count}' court may appoint a com-
petent civil engineer to be known as
commissioner of roads and bridges
Resolved That the committee < f
seven to whom was referred the mat
ter of agitating the question of better
roads in the state be requested to pre-
pare a petition to lie presented to
the next legislature asking for the
passage of a bill incorporating the
features | resented in the foregoing
resolutions
A DEEP SCHEME.
The following low down piece of
spite from that rabid Republican
sheet the Philadelphia Press seems
to indicate that the Force bill is not
only intended to control the South
politically but also in business mat-
ters:
“If the Democr it -» ba I never been
allowed to regain co iti-.d of the State
Governments of the South Northern
capital would nevi r have embarked
in the development of Southern coal
and iron and the surest and speediest
way to put a stop to this competition
from men who are our political enemies
as well as men who are our convnei
cial rivals is to carry Hir.ut'h and
enforce measures like th • L .<l_ie elec
tion law. They won’t li'-.e it and
some of them will be f .o s cn mgh to
make trouble about it; oid if we ean
get them into the coud lion they were
before 1876 we won’t hoar any more
about cltdap iron and cotton goods
from the South They will h ive oth-
er things to think about.”
Gov Boies has been doing some
fine campaigning in Missouri. Four
years from now h will stand u good
chance of being made President by
the Democracy.
