Florida College Has Unique Elections Set
Campus, Unusual President
BY HAI BOYLE
LAKELAND. Fla— (P—A 60-
year-old college president who nev-
er saw the inside of a schoolroom
of any kind until he was 18 is
building here the most unusual
campus in America.
The Florida Southern College
which Dr. Ludd M Spivey has di-
rected since 1925 already was note-
worthy because it had the only ci-
trus grove campus and imported
Hindu temple in the country.
Under construction—now is a -19-
building development designed by
the famous architect, Frank Lloyd
Wright, in an ultra-modernistic
style peculiar to Wright himself
Typical examples: a chapel without
crosses or lights, a semi-circular li-
brary that has an inside garden,
skylights and can double as an
auditorium or music room
The buildings are of yellow-col-
ored concrete coquina shell blocks
—made by student labor — glass
bricks and steel. They will be link-
ed by a mile-and-a-half esplanade
or covered sidewalk of unique de-
sign. No feature of the architecture
resembles the traditional Gothic or
sandstone and red brick horrors
j beloved on many campuses.
| Some students and visitors are
crazy over the buildings. More con
servative ones just say, "the build-1

group of Wright-designed construc-
tures extant.
They illustrate Mr. Wrights be
lief that buildings should harmon-
ize with their surroundings, should 1
seem to flow out of their surround-
ings.” he said.
As unusual aa the buildings is
Dr Spivey himself, a farmboy-
preacher-educator who never at-
tended school of any kind until he
was 18 and received his college de-
gree at 34
—Twenty two years ago he came
here to head a small debt-ridden
college of 129 students and two
buildings Now Florida Southern
has 1,600 students and at the end
of its present two-year construc-
tion program will own 45 build-
ings
Dr Spivey wants to keep his col-
lege reasonably small— no more
than 2,500 students—because he
thinks small colleges have an ad-
vantage over universities of huge
enrollment.
"They produce more leaders be

Whooping Cough
BUFFALO. N. Y._(UPI— Stret-
ptomycin, medical science's new-
est drug, has shown remarkable
qualities in combatting whooping
cough, according to research at
Childrens Hospital and the Uni-
versity of Buffalo Medical School.
Dr Mitchell I Rubin and Dr.
Melcbijah Spragins, who conduct-
ed the research, reported at the
end of nine months of experimen- |
tation that the drug generally
halts the whooping and shortens
, the course of the disease.
If the disease is caught before
the child begins to whoop (whoop-
ing cough usually starts ten days
after the onset the data strong-
ly indicate that the disease can
be controlled without any whoop-
ing. the report said
If the disease is caught in the
first week of whooping, the
chances are good of controlling -
it within the subsequent week or
ten days. (The disease ordinari-
ly requires six to nine weeks to
i run its course.)

"We don’t believe our experi-

to draw any final conclusions,”
Dr Rubin declared "So far we
have treated 25 patients with strep-
tomycin alone and we have had
as news service what we regard as good results.

DALLAS April 4.—(UP)—Two-
party government in Texas where
the state legislature traditionally
includes nothing but Democrats
and the GOP doesn t even hold
primary elections, was listed today
as the aim of a newly-activated
Republican Club of Texas.
President J F Lucey said his
organization has launched a grass
roots movement aimed at uniting
300,000 Texas Republicans and an

Doctors are uncertain aa to how
streptomycin acts, but animal ex-
periments at other places have
shown that the drug actually kills
the whooping cough bacilli
"VERY SICK" CHILD HELPED
"We learned that streptomycin
was effective for handling certain
gram-negative bacilli.” Dr Rubin
explained So we decided to try
it on the whooping rough bacillus,
which is one of the gram-negatime
group "
The first case was a three-
week-old infant who entered the
hospital last May in a "very sick”
condition The hyperimmune ser-
um was administered, but the ba-
by’s cough continued So the doc-
tors decided to try streptomycin
and the cough stopped in 18 hours
The drug is given in "aerosol”
| form It is put into solution and
inhaled through a mask An oxy-
gen tank provides the vaporization
and pressure The treatment is
given even three hours day and
night Although the doctors have
used streptomycin exclusively in
25 cases, it has been utilized with
the sulfas and the serum in many
, more cases
