‘DEV‘ IS OUT; IRELAND
BEGINS COALITION RULE
13 Policemen Are Scholars

I DUBLIN, Feb. 19. (P)—Eire be-
I gan its first experiment in coali-
tion government today, and to
most Irishmen that simply meant:
* ‘Dev’ is out "
; But while Eamon de Valera,
prime minister since 1932, has
been turned out by the Dail (par-
liament), he remains a political
' power in Eire. His Fianna Fail
i Soldiers of Destiny) Party holds
68 parliament seats, only six short
of a majority.
‘ De Valera followers, far from
downcast, were predicting the
overthrow of the coalition and new
elections within the year.
| A five-party coalition, apparent-
ly resentful at De Valera's 16
years in office, joined forces yes-
terday and elected John A. Cos-
tello, 56, a Dublin attorney.
The idea of an Irish government
without the mystical, New York-
born De Valera, was still a little
strange for many Irishmen. Most
politicians agreed there would be
little immediate change in Irish
life under Costello's coalition. The
quiet, cautious new prime minis-
ter’ is leader of the conservative
Fine Gael (United Irish) Party.
Ever since Eire broke . away
from Britain in 1921 it has been
ruled by a single -
ment. For the first 11 years Will-

It's no simple undertaking to
combine schooling with carrying
out police duties, but there are
members of the Abilene police
force who are proving it can be
done—and successfully.
Thirteen of the 56 persons on
the force are now enrolled in Abi-
lene’s colleges. After sitting be-
hind desks in the morning and
early afternoon, they rush home
to don their police uniforms and
are on duty from 4 until midnight.
The entire night shift, with the
exception of the captain, sergeant
and radio operator, are students.
Enrolled in Hardin-Simmons
University are James H. Filkins.
R. A. Ingalsbe, J. D. LeMay, T. L.
Moring, Samuel Smith and Wil-
liam L. Stegall. Of the six, two,

a part-time instructor.
McMurry College students work-
ing as policemen are Vernon
Adams, Charlie E. Bredemeyer,
J. C. Clemens and R. W. Shield !

WANTED HEARING AID
REPRESENTATIVES
Opportunity to Own Your Own
Business
The hearing aid business is one of the finest growing
semi-professions! activities in the country today. It
not only offers a substantial income to above average
men and women, but its humanitarian aspect provides
a deeply satisfactory type of occupation in a field
where age is an asset rather than a handicap.
Dictograph Products, Inc. manufacturer of ACOU-
STICON. the first electrical hearing aid has been a
leader for over 45 years. The rapid growth of business
has made it necessary to more than double our staff of
representatives in the past two years. Still more are
needed to handle the business available today, a con-
dition brought about by an almost sensational publie
acceptance and demand for better hearing on the part
of those who are hard of hearing.
We need dealers and acousticians today. This may
be the very work you have wanted to place you in a
position of economic security andvocational happiness.
We are interested only in men and women who want to
earn in excess of $5,000.00 a year.

they termed a “one-man govern-

"It's time for a change!" was
the rallying cry of anti-De Valera

now the question is whether the

Any break in the coalition's
ranks will force new elections and
' such a break is not beyond possi-
bility. De Valera gained experi-
ence as a skillful opposition politi-
cian before he assumed power as
prime minister. A half dozen
switched votes on any major issue
will give his Fianna Fail Party
the whip hand and overthrow the
coalition government.
The new prime minister and hs
cabinet visited their offices to-
day for the first time as parlia-
ment recessed for a.week. The
recess was called to permit Cos-
tillo to draft a program whose
main feature, he said, would be to
boost farm production.
