Description

  • Content Description: Photograph of Echium bourgeauanum (Tajinaste or Tower of Jewels). A single stalk grows on an open, rocky slope and volcanic soil of El Teide on Tenerife Island, Canary Islands. The plant has a striking, erect, stalk that is densely branched and covered with fuchsia-colored flowers that are tubular-shaped. The dense florets give a striking cylindrical shape to the stalk that tapers towards the top. Leaves are arranged alternately, primarily at the base of the plant. The basal leaves are larger and lanceolate (spear-shaped), while upper leaves are smaller and more linear. Other smaller shrubs with white flowers and grasses grow around the plant.
