In the last congress the Com-
munist Party had 15 deputies and
five senators To replace its depu-
ties, it was able to elect only five
sympathizers In the so-called Na-
tional Democratic Front. In the
new congress, it will have only
three holdover senators One of
these, the poet Pablo Neruda, la in
hiding, perhaps abroad, charged
with libelling the government An-
other, Salvador Ocampo, is In Mex-
leo. The Communlats elected no
follow travelers to replace their
two outgoing senators.

Communist candidates polled 70,-
000 to 90.000 votes. The party
claimed 50,000 members It is
impossible to estimate how many
Communist votes were cast in the
recent elections, with Communist
candidates barred by law.
Some 28,000 names of alleged
Communists were stricken from

munist votes undoubtedly went to
candidates for the Communist-en-
dorsed National Democratic Front.
