TODAY'S EDITORIAL
That Terriffic Fun Thing for Good Cause
This will be funny.
But it’s for an unfunny cause ... a fine
one!
Guessed it? . . . We’re talking about to-
morrow night’s laugh-a-second basketball
game in which the creaky-jointed Opti-
mists and lions will do battle—as far as
they are able, that is—at 7:30 at Ennis
High School Gym.
In case you don’t know what the gate
receipts are for, they go toward the com-
pletion of the new auditorium for the Com-
munity Center.
Perhaps you have a ticket. If you don’t,
just hustle on up to the gym Thursday night
and get one there and take in that "lotta-
fun” scene of Optimists and Lions, in their
second childhood, jumping and running
and shooting at the hoop.
Make it a must. You’ll be glad you did!

Early American
(Long has confided to intimat-
es that he will battle to bring
down interest rates — drug
prices and inequitable tatxies—
which hit lower-income famili-
lies in the pocketbook.
He has already sent an inves-
tigator over to the Nalsional In-
sititutes of Health to find’, oner €
how the big drug companies
manage to get the patent rights
en drug discoveries financed by
the taxpayers.
The investigator found that
NIH employees who have de-
veloped new drugs in govern-
ment labs have t aken out
private patents on their dis-
coveries and sold the manufac-
turing rights to private compan-
ies. One company which has got'
hold of patents on NIH discov-
eries is Merck and Company—
whose former president, John
T. Conner—is now Secretary of
Commerce. If Long digs too
deeply into this—-it could em-
barrass the Johnson adminiskra-
tion which he is supposed to up-
hold as Senate Democratic Whip.
Higher Tobacco Tax?
The Senator from Louisiana
will also strive to simplify tax
forms and wipe out tax ine-
quities. The sheer complexity of
the forms—the contends—costs
taxpayers money.
Instead of rescinding the tax
on telephone calls—as President
Johnson has requested, Long
would rather increase the tax
on tobacco. He believes that
any product which has been
declared a health hazard—as
Federal Reserve Board fails—
he is ready to push through a
bill compelling the board t o
rescind its recent rate increase.
Russ Long is not a person to
be taken lightly. As finance
chairman and Democratic Whip,
he could develop into the most
powerful man in t he Senate
this year.
Sniping* At Shriver
When Sargent Shriver took
command of the war on pover-
ty—he didn’t expect to come
under fire himself. He has been
shot at from all sides, including
some direct hits in the back
from his former deputy—Jack
Conway.
The next salvo will come from
Rep. Adam Clayton Powell—
who, though up to his pockets
in the poverty scandal in his
own New York Harlem—has
sent investigators to look for
scandals in Los Angeles.
They have found a disgrunt-
trouble before it started.
Cantankerous Congress?
On Capitol Hill the retiring
solons have been shaking
hand slapping back and
shouting greetings like old col-
lege grads alt an alumni reunion.
Bul2, just as she this is an elec-
tion year, the conviviality can
be expected to give way to
cantankerousness early in the
session. For Republicans are
itdhling to investigate the ad-
ministration, Democrats are an-
xious to show their independ-
ence of President Johnson, and
committee ch airmen are de-
termined to assert their lead-
ership. These are the ingred-
ients for (ferocity, filibusters
and frustration on Capitol Hill
this year.

Meanwhile—the Republicans
have been gathering inflorma-
Mon on the reluctance of Demo-

tives of the poor have a voice
in controlling the allocation of
anti-poverty funds.
The Republicans are also hap-
pily taking notes on the strife
inside the Job Corps camps and
the political exploitation of the
neighborhood Youth Corps.
The most objective investiga-
tion of the poverty program—
however—is planned by Senator
Ed Muskie (Dem. of Maine. Al-
ready on his d’esk is a thorough
evaluation of the program.
