LUNAR TOOL KIT—Space engineers have developed a tool kit which may be standard
equipment for the first astronauts to land on the moon. The two-cubic-foot unit
designed for easy storage in the Apollo Lunar Excursion Module, contains 16 geologi-
cal tools tor examining the lunar surface and obtaining rock samples. Weighing in at
62 pounds on earth, it still could be carried easily on the moon, as at left, where it
would weigh only 10.3 pounds because lunar gravity is only one-sixth that of earth.
Key tool is a battery-operated drill, right, capable of chiseling or coring rock material
from basalt to pumice.
