SHE'S AN ASTERISK
Spell It Out or Leave
Me Out, Wife Urges
By E6 CREAGH
(For Hal Boyle)
WASHINGTON, March
—“It’s not that I care personal-
ly,” my wife said.
“Of course not,”
“As far as I’m concerned," she
said, “they could leave me out

Grads Form
Partnership
Two November graduates from
the Baylor University Law School
have formed a partnership to
practice law in Abilene.
They are A. R. Archer Jr. and
Jack H. Bryant. Their office now
is located in the Compton Build-
ing, but they are moving this week
to the Mims Building snd will be in
their new quarters by Saturday.
Archer is a graduate of Abilene
High School and later attended
Abilene Christian College for three
and a half years. After nearly
four years service in the Navy,
Archer returned to college and en-
tered Baylor. He la a member
the Phi Delta Phi legal fraterni-
"Mr. and Mrs. Archer and their
two children, John Douglas and
David Allan, live at 817 Poplar.
Bryant attended high school at
the Abilene Christian High School
and was graduated from Abilene
Christian College in 1948.
He was in the Army Signal
Corps for three years, entering
the service in 1*43.
Mrs. Bryant is the former
Elaine Starnes of Abilene. They
live at 1325 North 18th St.
“They don’t have to make me an
asterisk, do they”
This la an annual discussion at
our house. We have it every time
a Congressional Directory comes
out The new one, for the first
session of the 82d Congress, is just
off the presses—a handsome blue-
bound. 724-page job crammed full
of information about your govern-
ment
But my wife doesn't like it She
never does. She’s in the book as
an asterisk A mere punctuation
mark. A kind of six-point star in
front of her husband's name not
much more than a footnote. You
could easily mistake her (in the
book, I mean) for a typographical
error.
All thia comes about because
newspaper and radio correspond-
enta set their names and addresses
in the back of the Congressional
Directory (about where the cough
medicine ads would come in a
monthly magazine) and their
wives, grown-up daughters and oth-
er resident females are listed, too.
“Look,” I told my wife, “this is
just one of those things. It's for
the benefit of anybody who might
want to invite us anywhere. The
asterisk means that the invitation
should be addressed to 'Mr. and
Mrs..' that’s all.”
“Hmmmmmh,” she said.
‘‘I still,” my wife said, “don’t
like being an asterisk. It isn’t
decent."
I thought that one over tor a
while. Thinking didn’t help though.
“How do you mean it isn’t de-
cent” I Mid finally.
It took some coaxing but she
told me.
“When I was about 15," she
said, 1 found a big pile of old-
fashioned novels to our attic. I
thought at the time teat they were
wonderful. Yeo know—romantie.
The hero waa always handsome
and daring, the girt was always
just what I wanted to be. They
had a hard time getting together
but when they did—--!"
“Yes?"
“Well, that’s what I never could
find out. Every time the here and
heroine got together, they would
go into a clinch and then there
would be a row of asterisks. Do
you wonder I don’t like asterisks?
Would you?"
