NEW YORK. Dec. 4. un—Infla-
on is still Public Enemy No. 1
meny people J and not ill of
em ire in the government, by
y means.
Some business executives ire
orried enough about what might
ppeh to the value of the dollar
xt year to be studying today
w to fight inflation on its own
ound.‘
Inflation is a fancy word for what
ost citizens know: The dollar
esn t buy as much as # used to
nce 1939 the purchasing power of
e dollar has shrunk by 47 per
nt /
DOLLARS LEAVE FAST
True, many citizens are lucky
tough to have more dollars than
ey used to — and that also is
* rt and parcel of inflation. The
liars seem to disappear down
a rat hole people know as the
gh - cost of living.
The jump in prices, so marked
per the Korean war started, has
owed down to a walk in recent
onths. As a result of the present
II, In trade many businessmen
e worried about possible defla-
in. They say that price cuts are
ore likely these days than price
Ivances.
But against this, others in busi-
ess warn of two things Inflation
[tied closely to popular psycholo-
i: and government spending will
it its peak next year, pouring bil-
ons into the business stream at
J1 same time it is cutting back
oduction of civilian woods.
HOW REVERSE TREND? -
Businessmen are’ asking: How
m we reverse the inflation tide
id lower the cost of living with-
it running the risk of a serious
imp, such as can get out of hand
easily as can inflation?
One answer has been prepared
a businessman for the top man-
ement of his own company. B.
Warren, treasurer of General
ods Corp., points out there are
te ways to control inflation.
First is by absorption. Warren
tys you can do the trick by in-
easing production and the supply
goods and services.
Second is by impounding. You
/ pay-as-you-go taxation, encour-
e forced saving, curb install-
meat and housing credits, end
relic interest rates to discourage
loans and credit expansion.
Third is by channelling or con-
tainment. You use direct control*
over prices and wages. If the levee
breaks, the flood is worse than
ever, however. And when price and
wage controls crack, inflation can
get out of hand.
