BRISBANE. Australia u — The
United States Davis Cup team
swept into the challenge round lor
the 11th straight year today when
Tony Trabert and Vic Seixas meth-
odically ground out straight-set
triumphs over the Belgian team.
Trabert, the Cincinnati young-
ster who has developed into the
ace of the team, pollshed off
Jacques Brichant, 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 and
Seixas came off the bench to whip
Philippe Washer, 6-2, 7-5, 8-6, for
a 4-1 American margin.
So just as it's been every year
since the competition was resumed
after the war, the finalists will be
the United States and Australia.
In 1939. the last year before the
war interruption, the Americans
also played the Aussies, while the
two years before that it was the
United States vs Great Britain.
The United States hasn't been out
of the final since 1936
The challenge round this year is
scheduled for Melbourne on Dec.
28, 29 and 30 and there's no deny-
ing that the Aussies will be fa-
vored to beat the Yanka for the
Why whould this lonely plant be-
have so strangely?
Here is the story of the thorn.
Some of it is Biblical fact and
some is legend.
The Bible tells us that when
Jesus Christ was crucified his
body lay exposed and Joseph of
Arimathaea came to bury him. He
was an honorable man, all writers
agree, but just who Joseph actual-
ly was is a mystery.
Mstthew said he was wealthy,
Luke said he was a member of
the Sanhedrin. John said he was
a secret disciple of Jesus.
Whoever he was and whatever
his reason for burying the body
of Christ, there remains this
stoutly believed legend of his later
life.
The legend says he came to
Britain in 60 A. D. with 12 dis-
ciples and on Wearysll Hill, near
Glastonbury, drove his hawthorne
staff into the ground, probably as
a monument to his arrival.
Then Joseph constructed a
wooden church at Glastonbury—
the first Christian Church in Brit-
ain. Years later he died and his
body was buried nearby.
Joseph’s staff grew and flowered
until it became a large bush. A
fanatical soldier slashed it down
with bls sword in 1539 but a
small cutting from the mutilated
plant was taken to the yard of the
church Joseph founded.
That is the plant, now a 15-foot
bush, which flowers twice every
year — not just once as normal
plants do.
The flowering every May is
because of the weather.
The flowering every Christmas
season — the legend says — is in
honor of Joseph of Arimathaea
and his kindness in attending
the body of Jesus Christ and
bringing the Christian faith to Brit.

blacksmiths worked more on their
plane and soon had people begging
to be "driven around."
“It was rough," Pliska, a white-
haired man in hla 70s, remembers.
“We broke propellors and since we
made all the parts to our shop it
meant hours of extra work each
time one snapped. No matter how
well we cleared the land, the
mesquite stumps were still there."
The blacksmiths learned to tip
the wooden props with metal.
“After that we never had any
trouble.'' he said. "Later some
fellow out to El Paso did the same
thing and beat me to the patent
office with it."
Pliska has pictures of himself
and that old plane in their younger
days. One shows the plane sitting
on Midland's main street surround-
ed by as many as could possibly
get into the picture. Pliska said
it had landed there during a
Fourth of July celebration.
Pliska still wonders if the old
plane would ever fly again but
says he's much too eld to worry
about it.
“I'm not sure I could put it all
together again.”
