In a race between two German
cities last month, Lena got off
course and was apparently found
by a man in Pilsen, Czechoslo-
vakia. Two days later, she arrived
home in Germany with this mes-
safe tied to her leg:
“We plead with you not to slow
down in the fight against commu-
nism, because communism must
be destroyed.” It was signed,
"Unbowed Pilsen."

JUST WAY HE TALKS
James Stewart's Hesitancy
Of Speech No Affectation
sense, but I suppose I'll have te get
off the fence one of these days.”
What impressed him most in Eu-
rope?
“I'd say the beauty of Rome.
Yes, that's it. The Sistine Chapel
and the Vatican Library are won-
derful places. Make you feel food.
Spiritual lift? Yes, that's it. It sure
does.”
I —-----By HUBBARD KEAVY
(For Bob Thomas) .
HOLLYWOOD — The hesitancy
of speech that marks James Stew-
art as you know him is no screen
affectation. He talks that way in
his den at 918 Roxbury Dr., too,
on such as his work, his weight,
his income, his future, his first
trip to Europe and any other sub-
ject the interviewer introduces.
Stewart seldominitiates small or
large talk, but when questioned,
cued, prompted and reminded by
the interviewer, Mrs. Stewart and
a press agent, be gives in his hes-
itant, word-searching, yet alto-
gether charming manner. If you’d
close your eyes you'd think he was
playing a scene. It occurred to me
that if Jim and that other man of
few words, Gary Cooper, ever get
. together the conversation must be
a brilliant series of “yops” and
"nopes.”
Jun has had remarkably success-
ful films since he became a free
lancer, able to pick his own stor-
ies, studios and directors What is
it—luck, a formula, advice? He
answers, after some seconds of
thought, and I condense because of
space limitations:
“Well, now, you might say I'm
lucky. Yes, sir, you might. I guess
I am. We got kind of a plan
worked out, you might say. We
look for certain things."
Anyone so successful must be
besieged with scripts.
"Yes. -that’s about all my read-
ing amounts to. Don't have time
for much other reading. How many
scrips a year do I read? Oh, 1
don't know. Quite a bunch. Sev-
eral hundred? Well, maybe. May-
be. You might say it runs into
hundreds."
Did he ever turn down any stor-
ies that he wished he hadn't. And
if so, what were the pictures?
"Oh, yes. Yes I have.” Several,
as a matter of fact. Now maybe
I'll think of what they were. Let
me see. ... No, guess 1 can't
remember the names of 'em.”
Television?
"Well, I wouldn't mind getting
my feet wet in it. But it seems
kind of silly to give yourself com-
petition. doesn't it? If they can
see me for free at home, why pay
65 cents? None, it doesn’t make ,
