Heaven Is Where We Make It
By E. B. Chancellor
Minister (Retired), Disciples of Christ
Heaven shines upon us today,
the clouds of yesterday fast roll-
ing away; and out of my heaven,
with my dictionary and Bible
close at hand, I write these words.
Before writing a word I prayed
a bit. I said, “Lord, guide my
hand while I pound this Under-
wood.” It is heaven to enjoy the
privilege of seeking divine guid-
ance. And it is heaven to be “re-
tired,” and ha 1 nothing to do
but enjoy the “fruits of labor.”
Heaven is big and grand and
wonderful. Heaven is so big that
heaven is in Kentucky, in Arkan-

sas, in Illinois, in Indiana, in Mis-
souri, and Iowa, in Kansas and in
big Texas. I have lived and
“preached” in those states; and in
every one of them I caught vis-
ions of heaven. Heaven is in Rus-
sia, too; but some of those de-
luded souls had rather "shoot the
moon” than to look for the hea-
ven of peace.
I know heaven is in Louisiana,
for my good wife is there now;
and New Orleans expects more of
heaven soon; for another sweet
baby will be there before many
days, and what can bring more
of heaven to earth than an in-
nocent babe? Sunday I got a let-
ter, postmarked New Orleans; and
I could read heaven in every word.
“According to his promise,”
writes the apostle Peter, “we look
for new heavens and a new earth,
wherein dwelleth righteousness;”
and this hopeful “look” brings
heaven closer; and as we join
Peter in this outlook, heaven be-
comes the brighter. I get mes-
sages from heaven every week;
sometimes by way of Houston,
Texas sometimes by way of Wich-
ita, Kansas; and sometimes by
way of OVER THE OZARKS,
postmarked Springfield, Mo. Fre-
quently heaven pays me a visit
through the pages of Reader’s Di-
gest, or Saturday Evening Post,
or The Ladonia News.
It is heaven to live‘in Ladonia,
Texas. While living in the Ozarks
of Missouri I felt like I was living
as close to heaven as ever I’d be
this side of death; and I even ex-
pressed that feeling through the
column, OVER THE OZARKS; for
certainly the good people o fthose
“holy hills” are full of heaven.
But the heart-pull of the “heaven
of a happy home” pulled me out
of the Ozarks and back to heaven-
filled Texas, and kept pulling un-
til I was again rejoicing “at
home.” And finally discovered the
thrilling fact that “heaven is
where we make it.” Other places
are good to visit, but Ladonia is
home, and Ladonia is heaven. In
fact, there is so much heaven in
Ladonia, it will he hard to leave
here, even for “heaven over
there”; and surely there can be
little difference in our heaven here
and “there,” except the disap-
pointments of here will be left on
this side of the divide.
Heaven is an exchange, and I
want to keep a lot of heaven on
deposit. The more heaven we
make, the more we have; and the
more we have, the more we can
give; and Ladonia is rich with
love and understanding and pa-
tience and forbearance; and La-
donia shares heaven with many
hungry souls.

spelled out the various groups of
GI insurance policyholders who will
and who will not participate in the
regular annual dividends of $262,-
000,000 for 1958.
Scott B. Harrington, manager of
the VA office in Dallas, said ap-
proximately 5,300,000 policyholders
will and approximately 820,000 will
not participate.
Included in the 5,300,000 partici-
pating policyholders are 5,000,000
holders of National Service Life
Insurance (World War II), with the
letter “V” preceding their policy
numbers, and 300,000 holders of U.
S. Government Life Insurance
(World War I), with the letter “K”
preceding their policy numbers.
Mr. Harrington said the 820,000
policyholders who will not partici-
pate are divided into the following
groups:
1. Approximately 115,000 Korean
and post-Korean veterans who were
issued special term policies classi-
fied by law as nonparticipating.
The letters “RS” precede these pol-
icy numbers.
2. Approximately 61,000 World
War II and 8,000 World War I
veterans who have extended term
insurance in the “V” and “K” ser-
ies, respectively. These veterans
lapsed their permanent plan poli-
cies and VA automatically extend-
ed them as term insurance without
further premium payments.
3. Approximately 28,000 Korean
and post-Korean veterans who
were issued special policies because
of service-connected disabilities.
These policies are classified by
law as nonparticipating. The letters
‘RH” precede the policy numbers.
4. Approximately 7,000 World War
II veterans who also were issued
special nonparticipating policies be-
cause of service-connected disabili-
ties. The letter "H" precedes these
policy numbers.
