Fiber increases your metabolism
and helps you burn more calories
Wow! You all have been busy-
on your computers this week!
I’ve had so many great ques-
tions and suggestions from my
clients, friends and others
through e-mails.
Fiber seems to be on every-
one’s mind these days and there
is some confusion so let’s clear
it up.
“Dear Pamela, I have been
trying to eat more fiber like you
have been encouraging us to in
your articles, but I am confused.
What is the difference be-
tween soluble and insoluble
fiber? How much fiber should
we be eating and what foods
have the most fiber in them?”
Great questions! Fiber is the
material that plants are made
from and is found in all fruits,
legumes, whole grains, beans,
nuts and seeds.
Since your body cannot break

down this type of carbohydrate,
your body cannot absorb it and
has to work hard, to digest it,
thus firing up your metabolism.
Anytime your body has to work
hard it burns more calories.
The two types of fiber are sol-
uble and insoluble fiber and
both are important to your
everyday eating plan.
Soluble fiber dissolves in
water and is found in oat bran,
legumes, psllemn, nuts, beans,
pectin and various fruits and
veggies. It forms a bulky gel in
the intestines that acts kind of
like a mud slide through your
digestive tract, cleaning as it
flows. That’s why it is a great
preventative measure to keep
you from colon cancer.
Plus, water-soluble fiber has
been proven to lower choles-
terol, because fiber binds to fat
and escorts the excess out of the
body. The added benefit is that
any excess fat that is removed
from your body contributes not
only to a lower total cholesterol
but also lowers blood sugar,
lowers stress on the liver and
induces weight loss.
Insoluble fiber is not water-
soluble. Insoluble fiber helps
prevent constipation, hemor-
rhoids and diverticulosis.
Insoluble fiber is found in
bran (wheat, oat, and rice)
wheat germ, cauliflower, green
beans, potatoes and celery.
I personally believe that
adding more fiber to your diet
will also help detox your body
of Trans fatty acids, so eat more
natural fiber that is found in
foods and eliminate your con-
sumption of Trans fatty acids or
the H-bomb!
Finally, I recommend that you
start slowly consuming more
fiber until you are eating 25 to
40 grams of fiber a day. The av-
erage American is consuming
10 tol5 grams a day. Adding
more fiber to your diet will
change your constitution a bit,
so drink a lot of water with
your added fiber and always
consult your physician before
you change anything about your
health care.

Tips to help seniors through summer heat
Coping with the heat of summer
is tough for everyone, but it can
be especially stressful for seniors.
Besides just extreme tempera-
tures, there are a number of other
factors to consider when the mer-
cury rises.
“Seniors are especially suscepti-
ble to heart-related problems,”
said Michael Collins, vice presi-
dent and administrator for the
Right at Home San Antonio of-
fice. “In addition to that, other
problems such as medical condi-
tions or lack of mobility can be
compounded by a heat wave.”
The biggest step for helping se-
niors cope with summer heat is to
have someone check on the indi-
vidual regularly. The Center for
Disease Control recommends that
adults in the highest risk cate-
gories, which include being over
the age of 65 or having a physical
illness, be checked at least twice
a day for signs of heat exhaustion
or heat stroke.
“Make sure there is a responsi-
ble party who can check on the
senior, preferably in person,”
said Collins. “If relatives,
friends or neighbors aren’t avail-
able, check with an agency such
as Right at Home that provides
in-home care. An agency can
provide you with trained indi-
viduals during the summer
months to check on the senior
on a regular basis.”
Among the other tips for seniors
and those caring for seniors dur-
ing times of extremely high tem-
peratures, Collins recommends
making sure seniors do the fol-
lowing:
• Drink plenty of fluids (decaf-
feinated and non-alcoholic) un-
less they are under doctors’ in-
structions to limit fluid intake.
•Consult a physician concerning
any medication being taken and
the possible heat-related side af-
fects.
• Stay indoors as much as possi-
ble and inside air conditioned
areas. If their home does not have
air conditioning, they should go
to a public place that has air con-
ditioning such as a shopping
mall, senior center or library.
• If going outside, protect your-
self from the sun, wear fight-
weight loose-fitting clothes and
rest in the shade.
• Get assistance to move or in-
stall fans or window air condi-
tioning units. Make sure the unit,
power cords and extension cords
are in good, safe working condi-
tion. Make sure cords do not pre-
sent a tripping hazard.
• If experiencing the signs or
symptoms of a heat related ill-
ness, seek medical attention im-
mediately.
* Maintain proper nutrition.
Many people do not eat regularly
or do not want to cook during pe-
riods of high heat.
• Make sure medications, food
and other vital items are on hand
so the senior does not have to
make trips in periods of high tem-
peratures.
