Step back in time to the cowboy life
Faithful read-
ers have you

BOERNE LIGHTS there was the smallest horse that I have ever seen.
I---If it hadn’t been for one of the local misses walk-
ing up and picking the world largest mouse up and
were simpler. I "-
don’t know if .
it’s the rising
cost of living, spiraling fuel costs or simply be-
cause the cost of my personal favorite Whataburg-
er, the one with two all beef patties, has risen
$1.15 in the last week, or what, but I have been
having dreams of the Old West of late.
That’s right, the wild-wild west has invaded my
dreams. I can remember watching all the old
Western movies and wanting to be a cowboy. I
guess kids still dream of being the town Marshal
in Dodge and hanging out with Doc and Festus,
not to mention having a crush on Miss Kitty.
Everyone that I grew up with played cowboys and
Indians and have perished in many a gunfight at
their own OK Corral.
I heard tell that we had a true to life Western
town right here in Boerne. That’s right a real town
right out of the movies and right here in Boerne! I
figured that Bobby Messina was having another
one of his delusional fits after LSU lost a football
game to some team or the other when he began
going on about getting a chance to be in a West-
ern movie right here in Boerne. I figure that he
was trying to be cast as the fastest gun in the west
or some other hero type. I of course recommend-
ed that he see his shrink and get it all worked out.
Heck, everybody knows that we don’t have a real
movie set right here in Boerne.
Well, after a few phone calls and a very short
drive down Hwy. 46, just a few miles past that
place where they serve the ever more costly ham-
burgers, I arrived at the gates of Enchanted
Springs Ranch. Driving down the road towards
the lake I thought that I saw the worlds largest
prairie chicken pecking away under the trees. It
must have been too much secret sauce on that high
- dollar hamburger I thought to myself.
Continuing on my way I then had to throw the
brakes on as a herd of Texas Longhorn cattle,
being driven by vaqueros, that’s right Mexican
cowboys in full vaquero attire were driving a herd
of Longhorn cattle right there before my eyes.
After a short break to get a grip on my one self I
finished my approach to the top of the hill and
crossed over into the 1800’s. Everywhere that I
looked there were hitching posts and wagons and
signage upon buildings that were not of these
times, they were from the scenes of Gunsmoke. Is
that a gallows that I see over by the chapel? I
parked and got out of the car in front of the livery
stable and walked over past the mercantile to the
saloon to get directions to the rest room facilities
when up hopped the biggest mouse I have ever
seen in my entire life.
Said mouse was about 2 feet high and it hopped
right up to me and looked me right in the eye ! I
was feeling sort of out of it there for a few mo-
ments and leaned over on the fence post and right
The Doctor I asking me if I were all right I guess that I may
have had to check myself in to some "rest" facili-
NTERTAINMENT ty for a spell.
WRITER The mouse turned out to be a Wallaby and the
girl turned out to be Steve Schmidt’s daughter and
I wasn’t seeing things that horse was a miniature!
Steve walked out of the barn leading one of the
biggest darn horses I have ever seen this side of a
Budweiser commercial and greeted me.
It seems that we do indeed have a real - to - life
full blown Western Town right here in Boerne.
Steve and his lovely wife Vickie along with his
brother - in - law Grant and his wife Pam are run-
ning a Wild West replica movie type town out at
Enchanted Springs Ranch. Available for parties
and weddings as well as any other function that
calls for special ambiance Enchanted Springs of-
fers full service for what ever event you wish to
stage. There have been a few movies shot out at
the ranch and several corporate shindigs as well. If
you want to take the kiddos out to the ranch and
give them a taste of the old west I would recom-
mend taking advantage of the First Annual Boerne
Wild West Day shindig that they are staging on
Saturday November 13 from 3 until 10 p.m. There
will be gunfights and stagecoach rides as well as
trick roping and other cowboy demonstrations for
the kids to see in real life. There will be vendors
and food and beverages and music provided by
Thomas Michael Riley, Mike Blakely, Bart Trot-
ter, Cowboy Doug Davis, Larry Nye..........Yes sir-
reee faithful readers a real full blown shindig. The
admission will be a paltry $5 for adults and kids
under 12 are free. If you don’t take the opportuni-
ty to see this movie set and working ranch for
yourselves be prepared to have the kiddoes on
your case for not taking them! Call 830-249-8222
for more information.
