M. S. WATKINS, OF MANSFIELD, TEXAS.
Letters Patent No. 81,715, dated September 1, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HATS,
Q t gttfth ntfera tn in ttm 9e1ttrsi attl 40k mahiu9 I arg pt f te ins
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, M. S. WATKINS, of Mansfield, in the county of Tarrant, and State of Texas, have
invented a new and improved Ventilated I-Iat; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact desdription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being
had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved method of forming hats, whereby the saine are better venti-
lated, and conform more perfectly to and fit more comfortably on the head of the wearer.
In the accompanying plate of drawings-
Figure 1 is a plan view of the block on which my improved hat is formed.
Figure 2 is an underneath view of my invention.
Figure 8 is a sectional view of 'the same, taken in the line x x, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The hat A is made of any of the materials of which hats are now commonly made, and is formed upon a
block with radial projections, as shown in the drawing, fig. 1, so as to leave enlargements in the crown of the
hat, which extend also into the rim, as shown. Said enlargements are tapering towards the top of the hat, as
shown in the drawing.
The lining of the hat is formed of a narrow flexible metallic band, a, covered with silk or other suitable
material, the band a being secured within the hat A, at the junction of the crown with the rim, the lining
extending upwards into the hat, as shown in the drawing, fig. 3. At the front of the hat the bands or founda-
tion a of the lining is beat, as shown in the drawing, so as to form two enlargements, corresponding, when the hat
is upon the head, with the temporal arteries. These enlargements in the band a of the lining serve the double
purpose of giving greater flexibility to the band a, and of relieving the pressure of the band a upon the tem-
poral arteries. Through the lining are punched small holes, e, corresponding with the enlargements in the
hat, which give passage to the air received into the said enlargements to the head of the wearer.
The radial projections on the block, and the consequent enlargements in the hat formed upon the s.mae,
may be of any number and of any form, according to the taste.
The advantages.of hats constructed as above shown and described, are, that the same are more comfdrt-
able, and by giving free circulation of air to the head, prevent or lessen the danger of sun-stroke.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-
As a new article of manufacture, a hat formed with radial indentations in the crown and rim, as described,
and provided with a lining, perforated opposite the said indentations, the metallic band of the lining being
bent at the front of the hat, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 2d day of January, 1868.
M. S. WATKINS.
