BROWNWOOD
This year Baltimore cele-
brated the 100th birthday of
H.L. Mencken, who was
born in 1880 and died of a
stroke Nov. 23, 1948. He
wrote in the Evening Sun of
that fair city. In the 1920’s
he was the darling of the
college set. His style was
filled with chewy and
unusual wordage and he
used his vast vocabulary to
lampoon and lambast every
target he saw with a
hammer and anvil force. He
gained fame as the star
reporter at the Scopes
(evolution) trial. He publish-
ed many books filled with
his journalism, on govern-
ment, music, art, politics,
religion - you name it.
He never sought umbrage
in a popular position nor did
he ever take a back seat to
an unpopular cause. With
sheer jubilance he hacked
away at traditions, the

early Rome, a writer then
wrote against immortality.

of it or not.
Today a journalist is one
who writes for a newspaper
or a news magazine
exercising great care not to
offend the advertisers. He
cannot write the slightest
slurs about minority groups,
even though the piece
shows something proposed
that he feels is not right. He
can’t offend the Polish,
Indians, women, and even
lately, the Chinese in San
