AFL Leaders Cheer as Adlai
Demands Repeal for TH Law

NEW YORK, Sept. 22 U—Gov.
Adlai E. Stevenson today de
pounced the Taft-Hartley law as
“spiteful,” called anew for are
peal, rapped hard at Gen Dwight
D Eisenhower’s labor views—and
howling approval at the Ameri-
can Federation of Labor conven-
tion.
Stevenson, the Democratic pres-
idential nominee, atoe drew warm
applause from the AFL delegates
in outlining a five-point program
aimed at closer labor-government
PARENDORSEMENT DUE
All in an. the reception the Hl-
nols governor received appeared to
make it a virtual certainty—if any
further evidence were needed—
that the AFL will vote tomorrow to
endorse Stevenson’s candidacy
after a tumultuous welcoming
ovation in the convention ballroom
theCommodore Hotel, the beam-
ing Illinois governor was intro-
duced by AFL President William
Green, who declared:
There are a lot of people sitting
in this hall who believe he will be
the next president of the United
States." ■
And when Stevenson concluded to
the tune of another roaring demon-
stration, the veteran AFL leader
spoke out again:

WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 —
President Truman announced to-
day the full itinerary of a 15-day
coast-to-coast whistle stop tour for
speeches in 14 states aimed at
winning votes for Gov Adlai Ste-
I vension.
The President’s train will roll
through parts of 14 states from the
time he leaves here on Saturday
at 10:30 p. m. (EST) until he re-
turns on Oct. 12 But stops in 10
of the states will be either on Sun-
day or at hours when talks are not
practicable.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 (-
Harold E. Stassen said tonight that
President Truman, starting a
coast-to-coast whistle stop four on
Saturday, "will do the low- level
jeering" while Gov. Adlal Steven-
son the Democratic presidential
candidate, “does the high level
sneering."
On the other hand, Stassen de-
elared. Republican nominee Dwight
D Eisenhower “will continue to
appeal to the finer qualities of the
American people. He will keep his
eyes on the gosl of winning the
pence and leading on to progress
and happier living for the Ameri-
can people.”
Reporters estimated there will be
a minimum of 11 prepared talks
and at least 77 off - the - cuff
talks to trainside crowds.
Prepared speeches are sched-
uled for Buffalo and New York
City. San Francisco: Chester and
Kalispell, Mont.: Spokane, Seattle
and Tacoma, Wash.: Shasta Dam
to California’s Central Valley:
Provo, Utah and Shenandoah, Ta.
In addition to his important
speeches, the President will talk
from the rear platform of hie pri-
vate ear in North Dakota, Mon-
tana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon,
California. Nevada, Utah, Colorado.
Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio and
New York.

Railroad Man Flags
Train Before Wreck
TUNKHANNOCK, Pa., Sept. 22
(—A Lehigh Valley Railroad man
flagged down a westbound passen-
ger train minutes after a trailer-
tractor overturned on the tracks
blocking the roadway.
The truck, loaded with cotton
yarn and drives: by James Baker
of Sanford, N. C., overturned at
12:15 a.m. (EST). Baker waa not
hurt The trailer landed on the
eastbound tracka, cutting the sig-
nal block wires which automatical-
ly flashed a danger signal to warn
a Buffalo-to-New York train due at
12:59 a.m. The tractor obstructed
the westbound track but did not
damage the danger signal wires.

building carpenter for Lehigh, waa
waiting for No. 7, the road’s west-
bound train, due st 12:24 a.m. from
New York to Buffalo.

(—Lt. Coleman Peterson, 38,
was found innocent tonight "by
reason of insanity” in the slaying
of a tavern owner the officer ac-
cused of raping and beating Me
wife.
A. Jury deliberated for four and
a half hours before freeing the
veteran of World War II and
Korea.
Peterson had pleaded temporary
insanity.

missed the Jurors. Peterson thank-

Defense Attorney John Voelker
told the jury the prosecution had
made no mention that Mra. Peter-
son had been beaten and raped,
leaving it to the defense to bring
this out.
The attractive, red-haired Mra.
Peterson, 42, testified Chenoweth
insisted on accompanying her home
from his tavern, saying it waa un-
safe for her to go alone “because
of all the lumberjacks around "
She had (one to the tavern to buy
beer to take home.
She testified she finally accepted
Chenoweth's offer and that en route
he beat and raped her, threatening
to kill her if she did not submit.
She said she fled to her trailer
home as soon as she could and
told her husband what had hap-
pened. Her busband she said, put
a pistol in his pocket and left.

Hendrick Memorial Hospital polio
ward Monday.
