Harriman Still Claims Win
With Edge of 11,150 Votes
NEW YORK, Nov. 3 un - New
Dealer Averell Harriman de-
scribed himself firmly today as
"governor-elect,'* though Republi-
cans still hoped they could some-
how upset his closest-ever elec-
tion.
Returns from the state’s 10,436
election districts gave Harriman
a lead over Sen. Irving M. Ives,
his GOP opponent, of 11.150 votes
out of more than five million cast.
The vote was Harriman 2,553,595;
Ives 2,542,445.
The' missing disticts were not
believed to have enough votes to
. turn the tide.
Republicans looked to the official
canvass of the votes and a count
of more than 6,500 absentee ballots
as possibilities to pull Ives
through.
Also there was the possibility Re-
publicans would go to court to
press their campaign charge that
Harriman is not qualified by resi-
dence to serve as governor.
In this tense setting, state Atty.
Gen. Nathaniel Goldstein — with
a nod of approval from Gov.
Thomas E. Dewey — ordered a
statewide investigation of report-
ed polling irregularities.
Ives, who had conceded Harri-

was a sharp upturn in Republican
votes, said today:
“The unofficial tally of the
votes in the gubernatorial elecs
tion is so close that I shall have
no further comment until the offi-
cial recanvass is completed "
In another major state ticket
contest, Rep. Jacob K. Javits, Re-
publican, defeated Rep. Franklin
D. Roosevelt Jr., Democrat-Liber-
al, for attorney general.
Harriman's residential status
was one of the sharpest issues in
the final days of the campaign.
Dewey and Ives charged he failed
to meet the state constitution re-
quirement of five consecutive
years of residence in the state
prior to election because he voted
in a Washington, D. C., presiden-
tial primary in 1952.
