Mrs. R. B. Terrell, pioneer Colo-
rado Citian, died Saturday morn-
ing at the home of a son, Paul
Terrell, in Sweetwater. Mrs. Ter-
rell lived alone in her Colorado
City home but had been ill since
the first of the week and had gone
to stay with her son.

Mrs. Terrell, the termer Mary
Mullen, married in 1007 in Colo-
ratio City. Mr. Torrell died in 1936.
Funeral services will be held

known graduate at Colorado High
School, graduating in 1886, and
Sunday at 5:30 p.m. from the First
Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.
F. Seleraig officiating. Burial is to
be in the Colorado City Cemetery
under the direction of Kiker and
Son.

Optimist Club Saturday in the
Windsor Hotel.
The contest was open to boys
of high school age and under.
Stewart will represent Abilene
at the speech contest to be held in
conjunction with the District 7 Op-
timist Club’s annual convention in
the Windsor Hotel Thursday. Fri-
day and Saturday The contest
will be held Saturday.
Optimist Clubs from throughout
Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and
Louisiana are expected to have
boys entered in the event. A
Winner of the district contest
will be awarded a $1,000 scholar-
ship to the school of his choice and
an expense-paid trip to Montreal.

mist Club Convention in July.
Lynn Musselwhite placed second
in the contest here Saturday
followed in order by John Todd,
Don Ferguson, Robert McKissick
and Warren Wier.
Love was awarded a check for
825. Musselwhite received $15, Tod
$10 and the other place winners
were given 35 each

W. Whipkey, Ed Majors, Oscar
Price, J. A. Sadler, Gus Chesney,
Ralph Lee Harry Ratliff and
Chester Thomas.
She is survived by Paul Terrell,
her son; two daughters, Mrs. R. L.
Perkins of San Antonio and Mrs
Victor Carlson, Chicago, Ill.: five
grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.

Wash Lytle, 111-year old former
slave who died in his home here

for his burial
Neely-Barnes Clothiers gave him
a complete set of burial garments
Mary Ann's Flower Shop provided
a spray of flowers and the Abi-
lene Casket Factory gave a dis-
count on the casket.
The former trail driver came to
Abilene in the 1180's, when it was
a tent city. He died without burial
insurance or funds.

War II, died Friday, in an Amarii-
le hospital from injuries received
in a car accident near Panhandle
Tuesday
Dade wee born Sept. M. 1928, at
Mount Vernon. He lived there un-
til moving to Abilene in 1943.

(RNS). — Funeral for G. Lay
Powell, 81, Mitchell County ranch-
er who died Friday, will be held
at p.m. Sunday in the First Bap-
tist Church.
The funeral was originally sched-
uled to be held in Kiker and Son
Funeral Home Chapel.
Dr P. D. O’Brien, pastor

Alerted Walkout

—America’s railroads are being
alerted to the likelihood of a na-
tionwide rail strike unless current
negotiations bring a settlement, a
spokesman for the Order of Rail-
way Conductors and Brakemen
said today.
J. A. Paddock, senior vice presi-
dent of the big operating union,
said "all provisions of the Railway
Labor Act and other federal me-
diation procedures have now been
definitely exhausted.”

Pillow Saves Boy
In 5-Story Plunge
NEW YORK, April 30 —A pil-
low that he dragged out a window
helped a 15-month-old boy survive
a five-story fall today.
The infant, Gerald Myers, had
the pillow clutched in one hand
when he lost his balance and top-
pled out a window at his Harlem
home.
He held onto the pillow, as he
fell and it was under him when he
struck the sidewalk.
H o s p i t a I physicians said the
child’s condition was satisfactory.
Retired Farmer
Dies at Snyder
SNYDER, April 38 CRNS -Mat-
tie Thomas Popejoy, 79, a resident
of Scurry County for 37 years, died
suddenly about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
He suffered a heart attack in
downtown Snyder and died en
route to the hospital
A retired farmer, Mr Popejoy
was born March 24, 1876 in Bel-
ton. He married Sept. 3, 1903, in
Itasca. Mrs. Popejoy died last
February.
Funeral services are to be held
at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Snyder
First Baptist Church. The Rev !
Lennol Hester, pastor, will of-
ficiate.
Burial will be in ths Snyder
Cemetery under the direction of
Bolger Funeral Home.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. H. C. Brooks of Plainview;
two sons, Fred of Hart and Bill
Popejoy of Snyder; a brother,
John R. Popejoy of Lubbock; and
seven grandchildren.

Jumps to Death
PARIS, April 30 (—Mrs. Marie-
Louise Verdier, 50-year-old dress-
maker, leaped 350 feet to her
death from the second platform of
the Effel Tower today before the
horrified eyes of scores of foreign
tourists. She left a note for her
family saying "forgive me."
Mexico to Build
Shorter Route
MEXICO CITY, April 30 m—The
Communications Ministry an-
nounced plans today to cut the rood
distance to Ciudad Juarez by 20
per cent by building cut-off roads.
The distance between Juarez, op-
posite El Paso, and Mexico City is
now 1,260 miles. It will be cut by
about 250 miles when the new con-
struction is finished.
At present the road swings from
east to west to touch all important
cities on the route. The new cu-
offs will bypass the cities and pro-
vide a more direct route.
