Dear Mercedes
Letters from F.S. Lentz, Jr.
Dear Mercedes,
We had been in New Zealand for
two days. I was still reeling from
its natural beauty and quietness. But
we had come for trade and were
headed for another reception,
whether we wanted to go or not.
The farms and dairies we had
seen that day, the bus ride through
the countryside would make any
buffet or speech pale in compari-
son. And I am not a wine aficio-
nado, even though the man who
owned the vineyard we toured could
convert an old Tequila lover into
one. His mission I thought quaint.
His growers’ association has faced
a seven per cent return of the wines
produced and purchased. He put it
into perspective and that is a
problem...they have traced it back
to the cork.
The corks deteriorate and give the
wine a bad flavor, it seems. So his
mission is to convert the converted
over to screw tops. That caused
some laughs. What would the
French think? Then, who cares?
We all agreed on France, great
people, weird, woodenheaded gov-
ernment.
Later...
We filed in to a very nice hotel,
as hotels go, and snacked on the cus-
tomary snacks. The view out the
windows was very pretty, but walk-
ing on ground is always better to me
than seeing something from behind
panes of glass.
The speakers greeted us, the old
grip and grin’ being the same almost
anywhere you go. Several govern-
ment people, their government, said
nice things about our country, and
our senator who was the honoree.
Our government people said nice
things about New Zealand and spoke
truth, then saying nice things about
our senator to keep the shine on their
jobs. Some were honest and dared
probe him about why things were
done vis a vis New Zealand that made
life difficult...
One minister who spoke had just
that afternoon returned from the
South Pole. To myself I
thought...there’s something you
don’t hear often in Texas — and left
it at that. Then others were intro-
duced and my attention was defi-
nitely wandering across the bay that
Auckland sits so prettily on.
Speaker droned on after speaker
until dinner. We ate very good food
if you like lamb... I’ll take beef, but
fried lamb is almost good.
Then more speakers. One in par-
ticular whose name I didn’t catch,
but remarked his resemblance to my
Swedish boss, seemed very polished.
The speeches ended and we began
filing out. In the passageway we
were halted for some security rea-
son. I caught part of a vigorous dis-
cussion on beef cattle, Santa Ger-
trudis in particular, spoken in that
unmistakable Kiwi tongue.
Affable men that public speakers
are, I told the one who looked like
my old boss that the week previous,
I had finally taken the tour of the King
Ranch, had befriended a man named
Beto Maldonado, a retired Kineno
who has written a book about life on
the ranch, I even said Kineno cor-
rectly. He lit up a bit on that remark
and asked if I had seen Monkey Num-
ber One, the herd, breed
sire...supposedly he is stuffed and
standing somewhere...no, I hadn’t.
To gut check him I asked if he
knew the proportions of the breed,
5/8’s Brahma, 3/8’s Shorthorn. He
did, I shook his hand.
After standing and talking to a
couple other men, he suggested we
sit down and have a drink and talk
Texas, as long as it was Irish whis-
key he drank. Sure, said I and we
sat. The trail of men we had gath-
ered followed us and three sat down
despite my conversationalist’s dry
looks. The kind that say, we didn’t
ask YOU to come... but he was gra-
cious and all sat down. These guys
were vultures and jumped him im-
mediately. About then I figured he
was a somebody, other than just a
speaker...
Boy was he... after I figured out
who he was and the others left, 14
was dumfounded.
This man’s name is The Rt. Hon. .
James Bolger, by his card. He has 3
business cards.
He has been Prime Minister of "
New Zealand on three separate oc- s
casions.
It was time to listen despite the
fact that he was “Jim”, that he said
that Kiwi’s don’t stand on the for- I
malities we do, that PM there doesn't
have the pizzazz that an American [
President does. Baloney, I said, you
are the only head of state I have ever g
sat with in a bar, will ever sit with 5
anywhere.
I was honored.
I also had just been thrown the
hardest, fastest curve-ball I had ever "
stood to do something with in young
life. He sensed the reticence to say
anything and we ordered drinks.
He had gone to Austin while 5 I
posted as New Zealand’s ambassa-
dor to the U.S. to meet Pres. Bush ' I
when Bush was still governor. He fig- "
ured out that Bush would become
President. Yes, he called that one " [
right. They had a long chat. PM *
Bolger wanted to check his states-
man’ credentials, Bush’s. The opin- A
ion he had offered Bush as President,
if elected, was right off the bat, to ,
lift the sanctions on Cuba. It needed
doing, he could do it early, and if =
damage ensued, would have time to
repair it. Bush declined.
It is one thing to hear this in the
news. It is quite another to hear it
from the man who has done it. It
has an historical twinge to it.
By now I was less apprehensive
about backing and forthing with j
Prime Minister Bolger.
It was he who discovered,
learned, that only New Zealand and
their mate, Australia, were the only :
two allied countries in the three 1
world wars that had fought in ev- 52
ery war in the last one hundred .
years that the U.S has fought in. 1
I had only begun learning...
Que te vaya bien, eh? i
