The “John Hunter” picnic party

The band boys will receive their
new uniforms next week. They
need money to pay for them and
our citizens should show their ap-
preciation of this excellent organi-
zation by giving them a crowded
house next Friday night. The ad-
mission is 50 cents. 5-6.
In an article in this paper of yes-
terday in regard to the Furniture
Factory a statement was made
that “large salaries were allowed to
perfunctory officers.” This is alto-
gether wrong and we cheerfully
make correction ami regret the
unintentional error.
What do you think of a man who
will lie on his competitor to secure
the trade? If the local artist can
find one of our pictures that has
faded we will give him SIOO for it.
Here is a chance to make SIOO easy
if he is telling the truth.

The Morgan Rothschied syndicate
of London have agents in the Unit-
ed States buying up gold at all the
refineries. They pay from 1 to Ij
cents more for gold than mint
prices and the government feels
the loss at the mint. It is said they
are trying to force another bond
sale.
The South Carolina dispensary
laws got a black eye yesterday.
The judges have decided that pri-
vate Individuals have a right to
order and receive liquors outside of
the state. An injunction has been
issued against seizure of such liquor.
This will cut down the “fat” the
state has been enjoying.
The baud uniforms will lie here
next week and our band will make
a good appearance then. The uni-
forms are composed of blue pants
and maroon coats and white helmet
hats. The coats are trimmed in
gold. The fifteen suits were bought

added new members lately.
Although the Tuxaukanian is an
ardent free silver paper it is willing
to admit that there are two sides
to this question hence will give the
“other side" a fair chance. By re
quest we give an irtlcle elsewhere
in today's issue on the llitaiiclal
question from Harper's Weekly
leaning strongly toward the gold
monometalist theory.

Austin Ross and Ed. Cox two
white men lining near Mandeville
Arkansas were arrested late yes-
terday afternoon and put in jail
here. Circumstantial evidence
points to them as the probable mur-
derers of Bob Pitts more so at any
rate than to any one else living
near the scene of the killing. They
will be held until Monday in jail and
in the meantime supbeonas will be
issued by Justict Smither for wit-
nesses and they will be given a fair
showing to prove their innocence in
the killing.
The “Pleasant Hour Club” eigh-
teen strong were out last nigh ser-
enading. They complimented
many in the city and then drove to
Sheriff James Dillard’s nice country
home one mile from the city and
gave him several numbers of choice
music. The following members
composed the serenading party:
Misses Ella Edwards Sadie and
Madge Hudgins Vallie and Kate
Warren Vallie Stuart Ida Trelier
Messrs. Mack and Eugene Sanders
James Hudgins Pompey and Wal-
ter Edwards Charles Palmer Pat
Torrans and Mr. Brewer of Magno-
lia chaperoned by Mrs. Yarbor-
ough.
Elsewhere will be. found a call for
a meeting tonight of the clerks
association. The assistant secreta
ry Mr. Mason tells the reporter
that the meeting is called for the
purpose to lay before it a griev-
ance—that grievance being the
breaking of the agreement by some
of the merchants who signed it
keeping their doors open after
hours. Mr. Mason said if the com-
pact was not kept by all he for
one would vote for all to stay open.
Another effort will be brought to
bear on these gentlemen to close
and if not successful the meeting
tonight wiil be called on to say what
is further to be done.
A colored funeral procession pass-
ed down State Line Avenue yester-
day. We noticed only three men
in the procession while there were
many women and children and
they were all walking. The corpe
was carried in an undertaker’s
wagon and it was the only vehicle
insight. This is the way our dead
used to be bourne to the cemeteries
only four men with hand pieces
run under the coffin bore it to its
final resting place. How the times
have changed. It takes now all the
carriages in the city to accommo-
date those who wish to attend a
funeral and the colored people
themselves when able draw on the
stable for all the carriages their
pocket books will let them.
Mr. J. W. Davis paid our office a
pleasant visit yesterday evening
but he had pumped a railroad bicy-
cle from Winthrop to this place
and his tongue was not in a mood
to talk. We asked him several
questions concerning wires insula-
tors poles and phones and his an-
swers were disjointed like his mus-
cles When he uses a few boxes of
axle grease on his limbs and gets
his jaw to working we will ask him
when in the tluinder he is going to
put up those “phones?” Mr. Davis
means business and when he turns
all other business adrift and goes
to work in earnest on his telephone
project he will succeed and that be-
yond a doubt. Our people should
call a meeting and get all interested
in a good exchange here to come
out and give him assurances that
they will patronize the enterprise.
There should •be a stock company
raised here of $5000 or $6000
with a quarter of this amount paid
In and further call of five per cent
a month until the system is placed
on a money making 1 basis and it
will then lie the best stock property
in t he city.
