A CHALLENGE.
Our present silver dollar is worth
a dollar in gold the world over sim-
ply because it is redeemable in and
exchangeable for gold and not be-
cause of any intrinsic or commer-
cial value. —Pine Bluff Graphic.
A correct conclusion of the money
question will never be reached if we
start from false premise or have a
broken link in the chain of reason-
ing. The question is a very impor
taut one and it is now stirring the
entire country as but few questions
have ever stirred it. In this time
of excitement there should be cool
heads and clear minds and every
Statement that is material to the is-
sue should be analyzed with the ut-
most precision. The Graphic states
in the foregoing clipping that “our
present sliver dollar’ “is redeemable
in and exchangeable for gold. This
statement is very material to the is-
sne between the gold men on the
one side and the silver forces on the
other. If it be true it destroys the
contestions of the silverites thot
the silver dollar is kept at a parity
with a gold dollar by its legal ten-
der character if it be untrue the
contention of the gold men th.it the
silver dollar is kept at a parity with
the gold dollar because the former
is redeemable in the. latter falls to
the ground. It must be apparent
then to all who shall read this arti-
cle that the correctness or incor-
rectness of the statement is very
material in the discussion of the
money question. The statement
has not only been made by the
Graphic that silver dollars are re-
deemable in gold dollars but it has
been repeated over and over again
by the administration press.
Now the premises considered the
editor of the Enterprise hereby
challenges the editor of the Graphic
or the editor of any other paper or
any other person on that side of
the issue to the proof of the state-
ment. Silver dollars are redeema-
ble ia gold or they are not. If Bro.
Adams or any other administration
man can prove that they are re
deemable he will do much toward
the enlightening of the people on
the all-absorbing question of the
daj
The importance of arriving at the
truth lead.i the Enterprise to ask
the papers m this State friendly to
the silver cause to republish this
article and make such commeat on
it as there judgement may decide.
The free silver men are called silver
cranks ami many other terms are
used to num i I e i li.it I hey aie want
lug in reasoning powers. Let the
test be made. To use a common
expression “let’s come down to
brass tacks.” .Prove gentlemen
of the gold persuasions that silver

else quit making such assertions.

are of the opinion that the
government lias no legal authority
to exchange silver for gold. It is
true that the Cleveland administra-
tion has virtually done this but
there is no law for it. Silver is full
legal tender money for all debts
both public and private and; public
this is the law of the land ax enac-
ted by Congress (loldliugx cannot

may. The Graphic la clearly off it*
