Good Roads.
That was a significant item the
other which showed how a city
was drawning all the trade from its
neighbors by making the road ap-
proaches pleasant and easy. Peo-
ple who travel on foot by bicycle or
in vehicles drawn by horses easily
learn the easiest road and take it
always except when necessity
drives them another way. Road re-
form is almost as pressing as mu-
nicipal reform. Nothing delights
an American abroad more than the
fine roads and nothing disgusts a
foreigner afoot or a wheel in this
country like the obstacles he en-
counters on our country roads.
“Good roadbeds and good grades”
says the New York World “will
change the whole life of the Amer-
ican people. Nothing else will do
more to cheapen the cost of living
in cities. Nothing else will do so
much to make life in the country
desirable and enjoyable.—[Water-

Mrs. Cleveland’s Guests.
Buzzard’s Bay Mass. June 13. —
The steam yacht Oneida which
was delayed in the bay on account
of the thick fog has arrived here
having on board the Benedicts who
will remain a few days as guests of
Mrs. Cleveland. A party including
Mrs. Cleveland rode over to the vil-
lage and called upon the Jeffersons.
President Cleveland is expected at
any time. United States secret
service officers are stationed in and
around Gray Gables. One of the
officers accompanied Mrs. Cleveland
ana her guests to the Jeffersons'.
Missouri Democrats.
Kansas City Mo. June 12.—There
is a strong probability that the
state Democratic committee will be
called together again shortly by
Chairman Moffett and that in re-
sponse to the demand of the chair-
man of the county committee a
convention will be called to discuss
the money question. Since the
committee voted down the proposi-
tion to call the convention the free
sllverltes have been active in everv
section of the state and now have
a formidable army of party workers
advocating the convention.

DODDRIDGE.
A Rising Railroad City in
Sulphur Township.
The Texarkana & Shreveport
Railway is now running to Dod-
dridge in Sulphur township 28
miles south of Texarkana.
Already a depot has been con-
structed and the town surveyed off
into business and residence lots and
there is not a particle of doubt as
to it becoming a commercial place
of considerable importance. Sul-
phur township raises from six to
eight thousand bales of cotton we
are told and nearly all of it will be
marketed at this new railroad town.
This together with other products
of the soil fine timber lands etc.
will insure its making a live town.
For some time to come Doddridge
will be the southern terminus of the
Texarkana & Shreveport railroad.
Town is well located on a high
sandy plateau four miles east of
Bright Star and three miles west of
Spring Bank; Kelly bayouLnear by
will receive the drainage and offal
of the place.
Work of opening out the streets
will begin at once. Opposite the
depot is “Fouke Place” a wide plat
of ground upon which will front
the business houses to be built at
first; then there are the following
avenues running east and west:
Collins Slay Bryant and others.
Several merchants are arranging
to locate there right away and ere
another two weeks elapse a half
dozen or more new store houses will
be in course of construction. One
or more saw mills are expected to
start up soon.
It is estimated that not less than
4000 bales of cotton will be brought
to the new town this fall.
Now is the time to get in on the
“ground floor” as lots are going
cheap. The first stores will reap a
rich harvest.
Some time ago 1 was taken sick
with a cramp in the stomach fol-
lowed by diarrhoea. I took a cou-
ple of doses of Chamberlain’s Colic
Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy and
was immediately relieved. I con-
sider it the best medicine in the
market for all such complaints. I
have sold the remedy to others and
every one who uses it speaks highly
of it. J. W. Strickler Valley Cen-
