Only a Joke.
James Walsh a railroader made I
complaint yesterday that he had ’
been “touched” and robbed of his ;
wealth by two men who had been i
in his company. Dave Edwards ar*
rested the men and they were car-
ried before Mayor Turner. Th y
acknowledged taking |5.00 from
Walsh but said it was only fora
joke. Mayor Turner said this was
carrying a joke too far and cost the
victim too much and he thought
as he could not see where the laugh
came in on such jokes he would
put them under a I'oo bond and
they could tell Hiram Glass the
prosecuting attorney about the
joke and if they could make him
believe it a joke he would let them
go otherwise they would stand a
chance of going to the pen for a
few years and perhaps when they
got out they would remember when
they got out when joking to keep
their hands out of other men’s pock-
ets and off of money that did not
belong to them. Walsh says they
stole SBS. They are now in jail at
“Kildee Flats.”

Card of Gratitude.
Seeing a card of thanks in yester-
day’s paper from Brother Johnson
we we were reminded very forcibly
that we had similar experience on
Monday night Dec. 30th 1995 and
thereby hangs a tale. The forerun-
ner »f the approaching storm was
a chicken of the masculine gender.
Then after an interval of about 50
or 60 minutes the main body arriv-
ed composed of grand-mas grand-
pas pas mas buds children of all
sixes and styles armed with flour
potatoes coffee rolled oats butter
lard preserves and nearly every-
thing else needed in the culinary
department. Well a “speech” was
expected. So we repaired to the
church with out mixed crowd of
Presbyterians Baptists Metho-
dists etc. and there; after a song
we delivered a great oration after
which we all bowed in prayer to
God asking His blessings upon the
donors. We trust to repay them
in spiritual food and may we be
able to benefit them tor their kind-
ness for which they have our sin-
cere thanks. H. B. Smith.

“A TURKISH BATH.”
The “Turkish Bath” Company
made a showing to a tolorably
fair house (only) last night. The
play is without plot and in itself did
not amount to the dignity to be
called a play. There was some
specialty work that was creditable
and the good natured audience
showed their appreciation by fre-
quent applause. Miss Eva Mayhew
in subretted character is a little
petite beauty and deserves being
in a better company than the one
in which she is cast. Miss Pearl
Evelynne under the hypnotising
influence of McGoogle in buries
quing “Trilby" we thought more
than creditable. The dancing was
good but singing poor.

The Revival
It was a large and appreciative
CoUgiegaiior that listened tu Evan-
Moore’s masterly discourseon "The
Three Salvations" at the Christian
church last night. Mr. Moore held
the close attention of his hearers
from start to finish demonstrating
to them his ability as an evaiyehst.
At the close of the sermon four la- (
dies went forward and accepted
Christ as their Saviour.
The subject tonight will be
“Faith and How to Get It.” There .
will be a Bible reading preceding I
the sermon on “Sabbath or Lord's
Day —Which?”
The meeting continues to grow in
interest each succeeding night.
Let all who can go out and hear
Mr. Moore and we know they will
be pleased with his mannerly ad-
dress.
Pursued by a Demon.
How many suicides think yoN
reader have been committed by
persons driven distraught and
hunted to their doom by the demon
of chronic ill health? Countless. For
instance we know do we not that
hypochondriasis is a monomania—a
sort of minor madness produced by
chronic dyspepsia? Again insomnia
or sleeplessness often a result of
the same cause culminates in a
derangement of the reasoning
faculties. It is therefore of
motqentous consequence to prevent
the arrival of disease at its chronic
phase when it daily and nightly
scourges the sufferer to a danger-
ously uncertain goal. No medicine
known to science as a means.of
arresting the maladies to which it is
adapted exists equal to Hostetter's
Stomach Bitters. Among these
complaints are chronic indigestion
and insomnia kidney and rheumatic
ailments constipation and liver
trouble. Appetite is improved by
the Bitters the blood fertilized
and bodily substance and vigor in-
creased by it.
