Who wants J. M Carter tor the
next Prosecuting Attorney—Wal-
laceburg. —[Wallace cor. Bingen
Social Visitor.
Hon. J. M. Carter of Texarkana
we understand will be a candidate
for Prosecuting Attorney of this
district. He is one of the grandest
young men in Arkansas and should
become a candidate the Messenger
•hall have more to say of him later
on.—Okolona Messenger.
The two squibs above are com-:
plimentary to our fellow-citizen
Hon. J. M Carter. He will have
strong supporters in both Clarke
and Hempstead eounties when the
campaign opens.
The old story of Prometheus is a
parable. Prometheus was on terms
of intimacy with the gods. From
them he stole fire and gave it to
men. For this sin he was bound to
the rocks of Mount Caucassus and
vultures were set upon him. They
only ate his liver. This grew again
as fast as it was pecked away. Are
his sufferings to be imagined?
Take a modern interpretation of
the parable. There is no cooking
without fire. In cooking and eating
the mischief lies. The stomach is
overtasked the bowels become clog-
ged they cannot dispose of the
food that is given them. The im-
purities back upon the liver. Then
come the vultures —the torments of
a diseased liver. Dr. Pierce's Golden
Medical Discovery is more than
equal to the vultures of dyspepsia
and its kindred diseases. There is
no more need of suffering from
dyspepsia than there is of hanging
one's self. Sold by all medicine
dealers the world over.
Kline i Steam Bread
Is popular because it is good; and it
is good: —
Because we understand how to
make it so.
Because it is clean.
Because only the best ingredients
are used in its manufacture.
Because particular care is given
to the baking while every other de-
tail is carefully attended to.
It is labelled—“Kline's Steam
Bread"—Ask for it—insist on hav-
ing it. _ 2 4

In the fall of 1893 a son of Mr. T.
A. McFarland a prominent mer-
chant of Live Oak Sutter Co. j
Cal. was taken with a very heavy
cold. The pains in his chest were I
so severe that he had spasms and
was threatened with pneumonia
His father gave him several large
doses of Chamberlan's Cough
Remedy which broke up the cough
and cured him. Mr. McFarland says
whenever his children have croup
he invariably gives the Chamber-
lain's Cough Remedy and it always
cures them. He considers it the
best cough remedy in the market ■

MOVING DIRT.
Ytslerday the city editor board-i
ed one of the fast cars of the Tex- ;
arkaua mule motor line and started
out to Quality Hill where the work
on Improvement District No. 2is j
progressing. He found a good many
hands at work with scrapers and
wheel barrows moving the dirt from j
the high places placing it in the !
hollows and leveling up the streets j
and sidewalks. That part of the
city has improved so much
that the reporter hardly knew it |
and it has not been so long since he
was there.
While over there the reporter (
was told that the streetcar compa-
I ny was ordered to lower their track |
1 near the school house so as to con- ■
form to the grade. This will ne- j
cessitate a great deal of expense j
as there are many yards of dirt to
be removed to comply with this or-
der.
The reporter stopped at the car
sheds awhile and found Mr. Mar-
shall the stable boss at work on
the summer cars. He said they
would be repainted and overhauled
generally and put on the road very
soon if the weather remained as it
is now.
The reporter met Marshal Cren-
shal Crenshaw out in Fairview and
had a cigar with him. Mr. Cren-
shaw was out calling on his constit-
uency an■’ said to a reporter that I
he was making hay while the sun
: was shining. A stop at Hargrove's
store was made and when we
asked him ;if he was troubled
with candidates he said: “Oh no;
they don't bother me a bit but
there are a sight of them—in fact
they ride up here sometimes two
on a horse.” . The reporter did not
stop to enquire whether it was a
“hobby” or a flying Pegasus but
suppose it was the former. The
trip was enjoyed and we promise
ourself to go out to Fairview again
some fine morning.
Your Worst Enemy Writhing
With the rheumatism is an in-
dividual whom if you have a
Christian spirit you would forgive.
He is no matter what his delin-
quencies punished enough. Nothing
short of Tophet could enhance his
misery Moreover he is in serious
peril. The disease is always prone
to attack his heart and kill him
instanter. As a means of curing
this disease Hostetter's Stomach
Bitters has the highest reputation
and the most authoritative pro-
fessional sanction. Its use in the
preliminary stage of the complaint
is the wisest precautionary measure
rheumatic invalids can possibly
adopt. The Bitters is also a remedy
of the greatest utility in malarial
and kidney trouble dyspepsia and
liver complaint constipation and
nervousness. It counteracts the
effects of hardship and exposure in
damp or inclement weather and is
a capital promotor of appetite and
sleep. Give this fine remedy the
persistent trial to which all medi-
cines of standard reputation are
entitled. '
HE SHOtTuT* MISSED.
Friday night Bob Echols and
Charlie Jones two colored men liv-
ing on College Hill became involved
in a quarrel. Jones picked up a
stone to hit Echols and Echols
drew a pistol and fired at him and
then fled. Yesterday Jones tnrned
up all right without a scratch the
bullet having missed him; he pro-
ceeded to swear out a warrant for
Echols. Echols had been seen on
the street just before the warrant
was issued but it seems he got
wind of the matter and* is now in
hiding from the officers.

Gladness Comes
With a better understanding of the
transient nature of the many phys-
ical ills which vanish before pr<j>er ef-
forts—gentle efforts—pleaf-ant efforts—-
rightly directed. There is comfort in
the knowledge that so many forms of
sickness are not due to any actual dis-
ease hut simply to a constipated condi-
tion of the s-. stem which the pleasant
family la.xativ ■. Syrup of Figs prompt-
ly removes. That is why it is the only
remedy with millions of families and is
everywhere esteemed so highly by all
who - value good health. Its beneficial
effects are due to the fact that it is the
one remedy which promotes internal
cleanliness without debilitating the
organs on which it acts. It is therefore
all important in order to get its bene-
ficial effects to note when you pur-
chase that you have the genuine article
which is manufactured by the California
Fig Syrup Co. only and sold by all rep-
utable druggists.
If in the enjoyment of good health
•nd the system is regular then laxa-
tives or other remedies are not needed.
If afflicted with any actual disease one
may be commended to the most skillful
physicians but if in need of a laxative
then one should have the best and with
the well-informed everywhere. Syrup of
Figs stands highest and is most largely
Med and gives most general satis!action.
