ALABAMA
"One of the cleanest cut and best I
relished plays produced here this
season” is what every one said af-
ter the curtain went down on the '
last act ot "Alabama" last night.
The company producing “Ala-
bama” with Clement Bainbridge at
the head is one of the strongest
companies ever here in the melo-
drama. The members all showed
culture refinement and training
even down to the "bad man" who
claimed that his brother's widow
was never married to hi* brother
lawfully in order to beat her out
of hi* brother's Mate looked like
he wa* doing a mean thing and
hated to play the role of a rascal
even on the stage.
Clement Bainbridge a* Captain
Davenport acted his part a* natu-
ral a* life and Fred Mower a* Col.
Preston the planter although old
made many mashes on the ladies in
the audience by bls quiet demeanor
and precision of acting.
L. P. Hicks the ’Squire was sim-
ply "out of sight" and whenever he
opened bis mouth and said his lines
the house exploded. Ethel Irving
as "blossom" caused many of our
society young men to weep with her
when tears would come to her eyes
at the idea of being separated irotn
grandpa or her northern lover.
The characters were all well sus
tained and the company is one of
the best we have witnessed In a
play here for many seasons.
The editor met Mr. Clement Bain-
bridge off the stage and found him
to be affable and as nice in his de-
meanor and bearing as any gentle-
man he ever met. We like to re-
commend such companies as the
above as being worthy of patron-
age and consideration.
Yesterday one of the clerks in
one of our wholesale houses on
passing down Broad street saw a
lot of fine white perch and he halt-
ed and looked at them longingly.
The fish vendor saw his opportunity
and holding up a bunch said:
"Can't 1 sell you thl* string?" The
clerk took another look and said:
"If I had them at home I would
buy—" and at this a small colored
boy stepped up and said: "Boss
you buy 'em and I will take 'em
home for you for a dime." The
trade was closed the boy was paid
his dime and given the tlsh and up
to this time he has not put In an
appearance at the clerk's home.
The clerk tells us he Is out 35 cents
and a string of llsh and the negro
Is ahead u string of ll*)i and a dime
and the fish vendor Is out the fish
’ but ha* a credit on the same for 25
’ cents. What he wants Is for some
one to calculate where he can find
the coon to offset his bill. Here is
a chance for it lightning calculator

A LIBERAL OFFER
Th* Allen Bro* A Wadley Lumber
Co's.. Contlbution to the
Drouth Sufferer*.
Mr. W. W. G. Wadley of the AI-
; len Bros & Wadley of Alie'town
who was in the city yesterday pro- ■
posed if bis partners the Messrs.
Allen would agree to it he would
ship two carloads of lumber here to
be sold for the benefit of the drouth
sufferers. He said his firm donated
a car to the Nebraska sufferers
and he did not see why it could not
give two cars to our distressed
home people. Two cars will hold
between 25(KM) and 30000 feet of
lumber and if well sold would
bring in the neighborhood of 1200 i
constituting one of the noblest and l
possibly the largest single donation
given in the state.—Shreveport
Times.
I
This enterprising firm can always
be depended upon to contribute lib-
erally to the cause of deserving
charity for a more generous hear-
ted set of men never lived than
those who compose this firm.—
Judge.
We know the two Allens spoken
of and can say the drouth sufferers
will get the amount of money the
two car loads of lumber will bring
for we never knew better men or
more liberal minded men than the
Allen Brothers who at one time
made this city their home.
A GASOLINE STEAMER.
A novel little steamboat called
the “Undine” dropped in ou us
from Garland City yesterday. She
is propelled by gasoline engine of
nine horse power which works on
the same principle as the one which
runs the Times linotype machine
and drives the presses. She can
carry when loaded to its full capac-
ity twenty tons of cottonseed and
she has been engaged In hauling
cotton seed on the upper river for
the Texarkana Oil Mill.
Mr. J. A. Gullatt formerly of
Amite City La. is the owner and
took the Times reporter up in his
pilot house and showed him how he
could by munlpulatlng one ratchet
lever control the working of the
engine from the pilot house and
go forward or "back up" as clrcuin
I stances demanded. So Captain
I Gullatt acts ax master pilot clerk
mate and purser; In fact is the
whole crew except a deck hand or
two. The Undine was built nt Ar-
I row Rock Mo. by W. N. Wicks
and lx quite as novtfl little craft.
Captain Gullatt expect* to run her
from this port and ba* sent to New
Orleans to get IHs papers. In the
meantime the tiny sterner Is tied nt
