TEXARKANA ARKANSAS MONDAY EVENING AUGUST 11 1«97.
| WATER WORKS OWNERSHIP.
There are several southern cities
as well as eastern ones owning and
controling their own water works
and deriving a revenue therefrom
sufflcient to run the expensesof the
city government besides getting
their own water free. Hope a
small city not forty miles east of
here owns and controlls its own
water works and electric lights and
the taxes are not half as high as
those of this city. Mobile Ala-
bama operates its own water
worksand makes a success of the
same. We think Texarkana Ar-
kansas could do the same thing if
a start was only made. We are now
paying for water ami lights and lire
protection the total amont of all
taxes receivable of thereabouts
have been doing so many years
thus falling behind in our obliga-
tions to pay the city indebtedness.
This cannot last always amt we be-
lieve our wide awake aidermen
should look to the controlling of
our warer and light plant. We
know some of our people will object
to this on the grounds of the Texas
side making a failure out of their
water works but this is no crite-
rion to go by for the
West Side water works cost the
Iclty many times more dollars than
they should have done and then
they were leased sub-leased and
juggled around in such a manner
thaglt was found necessary to dis-
pose ot the plant which was done
after gettlng It. Into a tangle and
many law suits and judgements
hanging to it. We ask that our
council talk the mat ter over and
see if they can devise means to take
charge of this branch of the city's
needs.
